MLK, Jr. Dreamfest 2020

Each year, we recognize and celebrate the life, work, and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Join us for the following special events planned for 2020:

Tellebration: Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Saturday, January 18 | 10 a.m.-noon | Free
Page-Walker Arts & History Center
Tellebration brings together two exceptional African-American storytellers, Willa Brigham and Linda Gorham. You and your children will enjoy a morning learning about Dr. King and his teachings through the art of storytelling.

Applause! Cary Youth Theatre presents Amazing Grace, A Staged Reading
Saturday, January 18 | 2 p.m. | Free
The Cary Theater
In Grace’s imagination, she can be anything she wants to be. When Grace is told she can’t be Peter Pan in the school play because she’s a girl and because she is black, Grace proves she can do anything she sets her mind to in real life, too. By Shay Youngblood adapted from the book by Mary Hoffman.

Mike Wiley presents “Breach of Peace”

“Breach of Peace” is based on true accounts of surviving participants of the Freedom Rides, as well as many other individuals involved in the early struggle for African-American equality. This solo play is a living monument to those remarkable young men and women of various races, religions, and backgrounds who rose to face the dangers. www.etix.com

The Virtual MLK (vMLK) Project Experience

Experience a digital recreation of Martin Luther King’s “Fill Up the Jails” speech given on February 16, 1960 at Durham’s White Rock Baptist Church. Hear and view the collective sound experience, digital simulation, virtual reality presentations, and historical displays. Sponsored by the NC State vMLK Project and Christ Lutheran Church.

“DAR HE: The Lynching of Emmett Till”

The Cary Theater
“DAR HE: The Lynching of Emmett Till” is a true-dramatization film of the historic interviews and events surrounding a murder that became pivotal in inspiring a generation to commit to social change in the 1950s. The film was adapted from the acclaimed one-man play written and performed by Mike Wiley and will feature a talk-back with the actor following the film.

Dreamfest Interfaith Service

Good Hope Farm
Give back to the community by preparing for spring planting at Good Hope Farm. Shift A begins at 10 a.m. and must be registered for using code 001659. Shift B begins at 2 p.m. and must be registered for using code 001661. www.mycary.org

New for MLK, Jr. Dreamfest 2020:
Help us fight hunger by bringing at least one nonperishable healthy food item to any MLK, Jr. Dreamfest event. All collected food will be donated to our partner organization, Dorcas Ministries, to provide emergency assistance to our community in need. Donation sites include Cary Arts Center, The Cary Theater, Page-Walker Arts & History Center, and Good Hope Farm. Thank you!

Conservation Corner

Holiday Collection Changes
The weeks of December 23 and December 30, curbside garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection for Wednesday and Thursday will move one day later for Christmas and New Year’s Day. Our Citizen’s Convenience Center is closed December 25 and January 1. The week of January 20, all curbside collections move one day later for MLK, Jr. holiday.

Last of the Leaves
We’re collecting loose leaves through February 2. Reference your mailed map and schedule or search your address for the final collection period at www.townofcary.org/collects.

So Many Deliveries, So Much Cardboard!
Flatten and/or cut boxes to fi t in your recycling cart with the lid closed. Avoid cramming it in so all recyclables can empty into our trucks. If you have more boxes than will fit in your cart, drop them off at the Citizen’s Convenience Center located at 313 N. Dixon Avenue or request a free cardboard collection at services.townofcary.org or by calling(919) 469-4090.

When in doubt, throw it out! Use the Waste Wizard at www.townofcary.org/collects to know what’s in and out.
