Find Your Way Around Town

This fall, 14 sign installations completed the final phase of the town-wide wayfinding signage project for a total of 29 signs!

You’ve likely noticed the colorful signage directing you to Koka Booth, WakeMed Soccer Park, Bond Park and other places you and Town visitors may be trying to find. It’s all part of our town-wide wayfinding project.

Two elements make up our wayfinding system: downtown Cary system signage and a larger town-wide vehicular wayfinding signage system designed to direct motorists to major Town recreation and cultural facilities as well as the Downtown district.

Award Winner ‘Epitomizes’ Cary’s Hometown Spirit

A hearty hand clap and warm thank you to Anne B. Kratzer, the 2015 recipient of our Town’s annual Hometown Spirit Award. For more than 40 years, Kratzer has worked tirelessly to preserve Cary’s history for future generations.

The Friends of the Page-Walker Hotel was formed with her help, and she then worked to restore, renovate and create the Page-Walker Arts & History Center. Since that time, Kratzer spearheaded the preservation of the Page-Walker’s smokehouse, created an educational herb garden on the grounds, and oversaw the restoration of the White Plains Cemetery. In honor of her support for Cary, she received an award, and the Town will recognize her on a plaque at Town Hall.

The Hometown Spirit Award is given annually and designed to recognize community-minded citizens who enhance the quality of life in Cary by preserving, promoting and carrying out positive small-town community values and traits.

Conservation Corner

Be ready for unpredictable winter weather. With a bit of planning and preparation, you can avoid major headaches.

Protect your pipes
Turn off all outdoor faucets, and remove attached hoses to help prevent water from freezing and bursting a pipe. Should a pipe burst, turn the water off using your master water shutoff valve, typically located near the water heater, or call (919) 469-4090 to have your meter turned off at the street.

Winterize irrigation systems
Winterize your irrigation system to help prevent water in the pipes from freezing and cracking the lines and spray heads. For information and a video on winterizing search “Irrigation Maintenance” at www.townofcary.org

Keep FOG out of drains
While cooking this holiday season, never pour Fats, Oils and Grease down the drain. Instead, turn FOG into fuel with the Town’s free curbside cooking oil collection program. Once you’ve collected at least a half-gallon (approximately one, 2-liter soda bottle), call (919) 469-4090 to schedule a free, curbside pickup. For more, search “Residential FOG” at www.townofcary.org

Don’t rush to flush
Your toilet is not a trash can. Keep trash out of the sewer system and help prevent costly sewer blockages and environmentally damaging overflows. Also, remember, some so-called flushable items can clog the system and cause an overflow. When in doubt, throw it out; don’t flush it!
For more information on these and other great conservation tips, call us at (919) 469-4090.

Hot Tips: Holiday Safety

The holiday season has arrived! No matter how you choose to celebrate, fire safety should always be a part of your festivities.

Fresh cut trees should be watered often and monitored for dryness. While Christmas tree fires are uncommon, when they do occur, they are often catastrophic. Consider removing your tree within two weeks after the holiday and setting it out for solid waste to pick up after you’ve removed all the decorations.

Candles used in celebration should never be left burning unattended and never used on a Christmas tree. Keep all decorations at least 3 feet from any heat source. And when it comes to cooking, make sure you watch what you heat! Happy Holidays!

Covered Tennis Courts Anyone?

Come out to Green Hope Elementary School’s Gymnasium on Wednesday, January 13, 2016,
