This Month's Headlines:

Be Alarmed!

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an invisible gas—you can’t see it or smell it, and it could be lurking in any level of your home. If you have any gas appliances, an attached garage, or heat with a non-electric source, you need a carbon monoxide alarm which is designed to detect dangerous levels of the odorless gas. CO alarms can be can be battery-operated, plug-in, or hardwired into your home and can be purchased from local retailers. They should be installed outside of each sleeping area but, for best protection, place one on every floor of your home. Test your alarms monthly when you test your smoke alarms and be sure to replace them every seven (7) years. For more information, call the Town of Cary Fire Department’s non-emergency line at (919) 460-4056.  If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds an alarm, get to fresh air and call 911.

Cary Collects: Your new digital tool that replaces mailed loose leaf and recycling schedules.

We’re keeping it green this fall with our new online and mobile app—Cary Collects. This digital tool replaces the mailed loose leaf and recycling schedules, making it an environmentally-friendly addition to our ongoing communication efforts. From your computer or mobile device, you can now easily:

  • get direct access to personalized solid waste;
  • view, print, or embed schedules in your personal calendar (iCal, Google, Outlook) collection and loose leaf pick-up schedules;
  • set notifications to roll out your cart on the correct day, even during holiday changes;
  • use the Waste Wizard tool to correctly sort hundreds of waste items.

Visit www.townofcary.org/collects to use these exciting new features and download the Cary Collects app for mobile use. Welcome to your new waste and recycling information hub!

Loose Leaves: Starting November 4, we’ll collect loose leaves from your street twice before Christmas at no charge according to your schedule. Place leaves along the curb by 7 a.m. the first day of each collection period for your area. Keep piles out of the street, away from mailboxes and fire hydrants, and off storm drains where they can clog and contribute to localized street flooding. View your schedule at www.townofcary.org/collects.

Holiday Collection Changes: The week of November 11, garbage, recycling and yard waste collection will move one day later for Veterans Day. The week of November 25, collection for Thursday customers will move to Friday for Thanksgiving. The Citizen’s Convenience Center is closed November 28.

America Recycles Day Shred: Join us for a free paper shred on November 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring up to three boxes of paper to 400 James Jackson Ave. No commercial interests, please. Proof of Cary residency is required.

Winterizing: Winterize your irrigation system now to prevent a mess later. Drain the system to prevent:

(1) water in the backflow preventer assembly,
(2) pipes from freezing, and
(3) cracked lines and sprayheads.

Also, remove your backflow preventer assembly and store it in a warm place.
