Goin’ Round and Round

In July 2013 we unveiled roundabouts at our two downtown entrances. The roundabouts, which bookend Chatham Street, improve street safety and traffic flow. We also added sidewalks and crosswalks at each roundabout location to increase pedestrian safety. If roundabout driving etiquette makes your head spin, we’ve got these tips to help you safely navigate our roundabouts:
• Slow down as you approach the roundabout; look for pedestrians before you get to the circle.
• Always turn right, not left, when entering the roundabout.
• Yield to vehicles already in the roundabout.
• Once in the roundabout, you have the right of way.
• Use your turn signal when exiting the roundabout.
• Be cautious; look for unexpected vehicles, pedestrians or bicycles.

Bells, Whistles and Big Red Trucks

We’re breaking ground on the relocation of Fire Station 2 on December 2 at 3 p.m. and you’re invited! Come to 601 E. Chatham Street to view design boards for the new station, meet the firefighters who serve the area and share refreshments. Originally built for one truck and four firefighters, today Station 2 houses more than double these resources (two trucks and 27 firefighters). The station is in disrepair, with walls, floors, foundation and ramps in poor condition. Our new station is expected to be complete in the winter of 2016. Funding for this project was approved by Cary voters in 2012 as part of the Community Investment Bonds Referendum.

Happy Holidays, Safe Holidays

Because the possibility of being a victim of theft increases at the holidays, it’s important that we take steps to protect ourselves and our property. We’ve put together these tips to help you banish the humbug from your holidays:
 - Lock your car doors, trunk or cargo area when shopping.
 - When purchasing big ticket items (computers, tablets, televisions), take those items home before shopping or stopping elsewhere.
 - Carry your cash and credit cards in your front pockets or the inside pocket of your coat, and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
 - Keep exterior home doors locked at all times.
 - Display those holiday gifts away from windows or doors where they can be seen.
 - When you go out for the evening, turn on a few lights so your home looks occupied.
 - Break down boxes from your new TV or computer, and put then them in your rolling recycling cart.
 - Write down the serial numbers of valuables and store them in a safe place in case of a robbery.

Improving Streets

We’re beginning work to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety on Walnut Street at the US 1/64 overpass. Our Walnut Street Pedestrian and Traffic Improvements Project will involve bridge widening at Walnut Street, new sidewalks, signal controlled crosswalks, and ramp widening to accommodate an additional turn lane. As we start the project, you’ll see lane closures along
US 1/64, Crossroads Boulevard, Walnut Street and Buck Jones Road. Not to worry, our businesses and residents along Walnut Street near the work area will continue to have access throughout the work. For more information, contact Bob Shultes, bob.shultes@townofcary.org or (919) 380-4104. Funding for this project was approved by Cary voters in 2012 as part of the Community Investment Bonds Referendum.

Hot Tips: Keep the falls out of fall

From gutters that need to be cleaned of leaves to holiday decorations to be hung, there are plenty of opportunities for us to drag out our ladders this fall. Before you climb, remember these tips to help keep you safe:
• Use your ladder only on dry, level ground.
• Have someone hold the ladder when you are working from it.
• Maintain at least three points of contact with the ladder when you are climbing.
• Keep your torso centered between the rails, and never reach out. Rather, dismount the ladder and reposition it.
• Avoid working from the top three rungs of extension ladders.
• Avoid working from the top step or above on step ladders.
