Cary It Green

Holiday Collection

  • In observance of Veterans Day, Friday, November 11, the Citizen’s Convenience Center will be closed.
  • In observance of Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 24, the Citizen’s Convenience Center will be closed.
  • Solid Waste curbside collections for Thursday, November 24, will move one day later to Friday, November 25.

Scary Squash into Compost
Are your decorative gourds or pumpkins looking a bit scarier than usual? Toss them into your backyard compost bin or drop them off in the food waste collection carts at the Citizen's Convenience Center, 313. N Dixon Ave., to be composted off-site. Please don’t include items with paint, decorations, lights, or candles. Full list of accepted food scraps can be found at townofcary.org/foodwaste

Creepy Contaminants
Candy wrappers, plastic cups, and plates are all creepy contaminants in our recycling. Please keep these out of your recycling cart and only include accepted items. Use the Waste Wizard at townofcary.org/collects or the Cary Collects mobile app to search for the proper disposal method of a specific item.

Fertilizing Your Lawn this Fall? Did you know...
Excess and stray fertilizer pollute our waterways when they are washed into storm drains. Smart fertilizing helps keep our streams healthy and our lawns lush. Follow manufacturer guidelines to apply the right amount and sweep fertilizer that falls on hard surfaces back onto your lawn.

Loose Leaf Season is Just Around the Corner
Starting November 7, we’ll collect loose leaves from your street twice before Christmas at no charge according to your schedule. To view or print your schedule, enter your address at townofcary.org/collects or download the Cary Collects app for mobile use.

  • To ensure collection, place leaves along the curb by 7 a.m. on the first day of your collection period.
  • Keep piles out of the street, away from mailboxes and fire hydrants, and off storm drains and water meters. Keep rocks, branches, and litter out of piles.

Got more leaves? If collection has passed, leaves placed inside reusable containers with handles or paper bags can be included in your regular weekly yard waste for pickup.

Native Plants, Solar, and more!

Go green at home with one of our many free classes taking place in person and online. Learn from environmental experts about interesting topics such as how to plant wildflowers to support pollinators, exploring solar energy for your home, and more. To register, visit townofcary.org/green

Tree Pruning Workshop

Want to know how best to trim tree limbs? Join us for a hands-on tree pruning workshop, Saturday, October 29, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at Jack Smith Park. Register via myCary.org

Fats, Oils & Grease (FOG)

Fire up the grill or deep fryer safely! Properly and easily dispose of any cooking fats, oils, and grease (FOG) through Cary’s Residential Cooking Oil Curbside Collection and Recycling Program. Simply place the cooled, used cooking oil and grease in a plastic screwtop food container. Once you have collected at least a half-gallon (approximately one two-liter soda bottle), properly label the container "used cooking oil" and schedule a free curbside pickup by dialing 311 anywhere within Town limits or (919)469-4000 outside Cary. Did you know? Used cooking oil is recycled into clean burning biofuel.
