Don’t Be a Victim

Often, break-ins are crimes of opportunity, meaning that the offense occurs simply because a door was left unlocked. To avoid being a victim of theft, don’t leave valuables - this includes loose change and cash - in plain view. And before you turn in for the night, lock your car, shed and exterior doors.

Remember, if you’ve been a victim, contact our Police Department as soon as you suspect a crime has occurred. Your doing so helps increase the chances of finding the suspect and preventing future incidents.

Before the holiday season, consider scheduling a free home safety inspection. Our Crime Prevention Team is available to conduct assessments at your home or business. Once scheduled, an officer will come to your location to identify physical weaknesses in and around your home or business and offer low-cost suggestions to improve safety and security. These surveys are best conducted during daylight and last about an hour. Schedule your home safety evaluation today! Call (919) 469-4324.

Avoid FOG

While cooking this holiday season, never pour fats, oils and grease (FOG) down the drain. Instead, place cooled, used cooking oil, and grease in a plastic screw-top container for recycling with our free, curbside cooking oil collection program.

Once you’ve filled at least a half-gallon (about one, 2-liter soda bottle), label the container “used cooking oil,” and call us to schedule a free, curbside pickup.

Recycling Rules

Giving away lots of sweet treats this Halloween? Unfortunately, those candy bags and wrappers are all creepy contaminants in our recycling stream.

Treat your cart right and only recycle accepted items. Refer to the list on the back of your new recycling calendar being mailed this October.
“Recycling” at http://www.townofcary.org/

Loose Leaves

Don’t let your leaves blow in the breeze. Your loose leaves will be collected from your street twice before Christmas at no charge. Check the map and schedule mailed in early October.

Remember to place leaves along the curb by 7 a.m. on the first day of your area’s collection, and keep them out of the street, away from mailboxes and fire hydrants. It’s also important to keep them out of the storm drains. As always, leaves can be placed curbside in reusable containers or brown paper bags throughout the year for your weekly yard waste collection.

Greenway Etiquette

Everyone loves our Town’s greenways - parents with strollers, children learning to ride bikes, long-distance runners and seniors out for a stroll.

Show courtesy to other trail users, and stay on the right side of the trail lane at all times except to pass. That also goes for Fido who must be on a maximum 6-foot leash.

Pass on the left, and let your fellow users know you’re coming. Leave your headphones at home, so you can hear what’s going on around you and enjoy nature. Help us ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all greenway users.
“Greenways” at http://www.townofcary.org/

Telling Cary’s Story

Travel through our Town’s history with the Friends of Page-Walker who are actively capturing the stories of our community and sharing them online in collaboration with the Southern Oral History Program of UNC’s Center for the Study of the American South.

At its core, an oral history is storytelling. Come listen to Cary’s story as told by the people who’ve lived it. Historians, students and curators alike can learn what makes our town the community it is today. The event is on October 27 at 7:30 p.m., at Page-Walker Arts & History Center.

Hot Tips: Warm Your Home Safely

As we endure the last weeks of hot weather, it’s hard to imagine a cooler forecast on the horizon. Yes, soon it’ll be time to turn up the thermostat. Did you know that heating fires are one of the top three causes of fire in our town? Before you turn on your heat pump or furnace, make sure your system is in good working order, and have it serviced if needed. In addition, give all space heaters and baseboard heaters at least 3 feet of distance from all flammable items. If you have a wood burning fireplace, think about having it inspected or cleaned by a professional to reduce your chances of having a chimney fire. Finally, consider letting our Fire Department visit your home for a free inspection to help identify and reduce the risks of fire in your residence.
