Green Level W. Road Widening

We’re in the planning and design phase of the Green Level West Road Widening project that will look at widening alternatives for Green Level West Road from NC55 Highway to Green Level Church Road, however the construction project will be limited from NC540 to NC55. The project will provide additional capacity for Cary commuters, improve pedestrian connectivity, and improve bicycle mobility for experienced users.
Join us October 29th for a public information workshop. Check out current design plans, and weigh in on what you see. Stop by Fire Station 8 at 408 Mills Park Drive anytime from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

Ted Boyd Hired as Cary's Next D'town Development Manager

Join us in welcoming Ted Boyd, our next Downtown Development Manager. Boyd, a recipient of one of Charlotte Business Journal’s 2013 “40 Under 40” awards, was most recently the Director of Historic South End at Charlotte Center City Partners.
He was selected from a pool of 225 applicants from as far away as Washington, Florida and New Hampshire.
In his new role, Boyd will be tasked with continuing the revitalization of Downtown Cary. Boyd will serve as the Town’s key contact for those interested in downtown development and will work to continue downtown development by recruiting businesses and promoting economic opportunities.
Boyd holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from The Citadel and has received multiple Project for Public Spaces awards from the national planning and design non-profit, Placemaking for Communities. He can be reached at (919) 462-3870 or ted.boyd@townofcary.org.
   Welcome to Cary, Ted!

Stay Safe from Cyber Threats

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month. Cyber threats are one of the most serious economic and national security challenges our country faces, and it doesn’t stop at Cary’s border.
From cyber bullying to identity theft to business loss and beyond, cyber security touches us every day, whether or not you know it.
Follow simple practices suggested by our Cyber Crimes Unit to keep your personal information safe. Keep antivirus software updated and running. Download files from verified sources. Use complex passwords and change them often. Never keep your computer on while not in use (this saves energy, too!), and only connect to free wireless hotspots in public places where you know the source, like a train station or restaurant.

Oily Leaks = Oily Creeks

You may be harming the environment if your vehicle leaks oil. Repair leaks and keep our water clean. If you spill fluids, contain the area with rags or cat litter. Sweep up and safely dispose of the waste material. When changing car fluids, drain into a clean plastic container with a screw top lid. Take the oil to an oil collection site or call Public Works & Utilities to request a pick up.

November Holiday Collections

Town offices will close November 11 for Veteran’s Day; however, solid waste, yard waste and yellow week recycling will be collected as normal that week.
During the week of November 24, we’ll adjust our schedule due to Thanksgiving. All Tuesday and Wednesday customers, including yellow week recycling customers, will have their materials collected as regularly scheduled.
Thursday and Friday customers will have their materials collected one day later as follows: Thursday’s collection will be Friday 11/29/13; and Friday’s collection will be on Saturday 11/30/13.
Town offices will close November 28 -29 for the Thanksgiving holiday. The Citizen’s Convenience Center will close November 28.

Turn Holiday Cooking Oils into Bio-Fuels

The Town of Cary invites you to save your used cooking oil for conversion into an environmentally- friendly bio-fuel. All solid waste customers may participate by saving waste cooking oil in a plastic container sealed with a screw cap lid labeled “waste cooking oil.” The program is available year-round and offers a viable alternative to pouring grease down the drain, which is potentiallly costly and environmentally damaging.

America Recycles

Celebrate America Recycles Day at our paper shredding event November 16 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Garmon Operations Center. Bring up to three boxes of confidential papers for free, onsite destruction and recycling. No commercial interests, please.
Can’t make it out? You can now recycle shredded paper at the curb. Just place it in a knotted, clear plastic bag in your cart with your other recyclables.

Winterize Your System

Consider winterizing your automatic irrigation system to help prevent water in the pipes from freezing and cracking the lines and spray heads. To do this, drain the water from your system and then either remove or insulate the backflow preventor and other exposed pipes.

Leaves on the Loose

As the temperature drops, so do the leaves, and that means we’re mailing you a map and schedule of our annual Loose Leaf Collection program.
Starting November 12, we’ll collect loose leaves from your home twice before Christmas at no charge according to the schedule.
When gathering leaves, use a rake or broom to clean the yard, driveway and gutters, and never push leaves and debris into a stream or storm drain. On the first day of collection in your area, place loose leaves at the curb by 7 a.m. Be sure to keep leaf piles away from storm drains, ditches and streams.

HOT TIPS: Check Your Smoke Alarms

Cut the risk of dying in your home in half by changing the batteries in your smoke alarms when you change your clocks back to standard time. Data show a majority of home fires occur from 2-5 a.m. when most of the occupants are asleep. Mistakenly, people believe that smoke will wake them when, in fact, it can dull your senses, cause loss of consciousness and even death. More often than not, home fire related deaths are caused by smoke inhalation, not flames or burns. A working smoke alarm could save your life.
