New Design

We’re updating our website. Take our quick online survey through September 30 to let us know how you use the current site and what might make a new site more useful. We’ll unveil the new site in 2016.

Imagine Cary

Interested in knowing where we are with our Imagine Cary efforts? On October 1 our Town Council will hold a work session during which they’ll review progress we’ve made with the planning process and share future steps. You may remember that last spring we completed the second phase of Imagine Cary–Community Choices. This summer, we worked on the third phase, which involved preparing a draft of the Cary Community Plan guided by policy recommendations approved by our Council at its work sessions on March 3 and 24, 2015. We also compiled policy statements on topics such as the environment, public facilities and services and historic preservation. Our thanks to the hundreds of participants who shared their opinions on the future of housing, transportation, employment, commercial centers, and southwestern and downtown Cary.

Early this winter we’ll hold an open house where citizens can review and comment on the draft plan; we’ll publicize this meeting as the date is finalized. To view drafts of the Policy Recommendation Report, including full appendices with public input details, visit www.imaginecary.org.

Recycling Reminder

As we enter the final stretch of our curbside recycling survey, we’d like to get in one more reminder. Plastic bags and plastic wrap packaging should not be in your recycling cart. Our recycling vendor doesn’t accept these, including plastic bags in which you receive your newspaper or the plastic that’s wrapped around your multi-packs of bottled water. Stick to recycling the items on our accepted list.

Backyard Birds?

To date, avian flu has impacted more than 20 states and over 50 million birds. Affected flocks show few signs of illness until they are within 24 hours of death; no treatment can save them. The greatest risk to flocks begins with the fall movement of migratory waterfowl south from their breeding grounds in Canada.

If you’ve got chickens in your backyard, regardless of the number, to help protect them from avian flu, the NC Department of Agriculture is requiring that you register with NCFarmID. This will allow the Department to provide you with information about how to prevent infection, to keep you updated as the fall migration season approaches and to contact you if there’s an outbreak of avian influenza.

Registration is free and can be completed online; all data is kept confidential. For more information or to register your flock, visit www.ncagr.gov/ncfarmid (choose Backyard Flock) or call (919) 707-3250.

Take Your Pride Outside

On October 3, take part in our annual Fall Litter Sweep; multiple volunteer shifts are available within the event’s 8 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. span. We’ll provide the tools you need to remove litter from our streets, parks, greenways, trails and neighborhoods. Our public works crews will collect the bags for disposal. Pre-registration required; call (919) 469-4301 or email sarah.justice@townofcary.org.

Hot Tips: Hear the Beep Where You Sleep

Did you know most fire deaths occur between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when many of us are sleeping? Don’t fall victim to the myth that if you’re a light sleeper you’ll hear a fire alarm in another part of the house or be awoken by the smell of smoke. Every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm. Fires are fast, hot, dark and deadly, and you can quickly be overwhelmed by smoke. Having working smoke alarms in your house cuts by half your risk of dying in a fire. You should have a smoke alarm on each floor, outside of sleeping areas and in every bedroom. Early detection and notification affords you and your loved ones the most opportunity to escape a fire. On October 3 during Fire Prevention week, join our Fire Department from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Park West Village shopping center for a Safety Day celebration. We’ll have our friends from the Morrisville Fire Department there, too.

New FEMA Floodmaps

The North Carolina Floodplain Mapping Program (NCFMP) on behalf of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has released draft revised floodplain maps for Wake County. If your property is within a FEMA floodplain, we’ll be contacting you by mail. In addition, FEMA representatives are holding a public meeting on October 15 from 4-8 p.m at the Bond Park Community Center; you’ll be able to meet with FEMA officials and ask questions about how the changes impact you and your property. You can view the Wake County floodplain maps online at the Flood Risk Information System website: http://fris.nc.gov/fris/.

The State’s comment period for the Chatham County maps has expired and NCFMP is revising maps based on comments. Final Chatham County floodplain maps are expected in late 2015.

Tank Talk

Join us at the Herb Young Community Center on October 7 from 4-7 p.m. for a public meeting regarding our new elevated water storage tank at 31 Kilmayne Drive. We’ll present the draft preliminary engineering report for the tank including concept plans and site analysis. Informational stations will be set up, and our staff will be available to answer your questions. As this is an informal meeting without a structured presentation, stop by at any point in the evening to speak with us about the project. While the focus is on our Kilmayne Tank, feel free to bring your questions about upcoming rehabilitation work on our Maynard Tank.

Play Where You Live

Registration for our winter youth basketball for ages 9-18 (as of October 15, 2015) is October 5-25 for both Cary residents and non-residents. The winter season runs from December through February 2016. You’ll notice one change to our popular youth basketball program. We made the move from Town-wide to zone-based organization of our leagues. With this enhancement, you’ll be able to practice and play more frequently at locations closer to your home.

Cart Safety

Thinking it would be fun to take a golf cart out on our streets for a spin? Before you do, you should know that there are laws that apply to golf carts and their drivers. You must be at least 16 years old and a licensed driver to operate a golf cart. When driving the cart, you’ll need to drive no faster than 20 mph and only on approved streets. While on the street, follow traffic signals and signs. If you’re a passenger, don’t ride in the space in which golf clubs are carried. And never operate a golf cart while impaired or intoxicated.

Maintaining Tryon Road

Our Tryon Road Maintenance Repairs Project has begun. We’re working with the North Carolina Department of Transportation to repair curb and gutter, pavement and guardrail. Throughout the project, expected to be completed in late fall 2015, you’ll see changes in traffic patterns from Kildaire Farm Road to Walnut Street; we’ll share this information through regular traffic updates.

Questions? Contact Bob Shultes, (919) 380 4104 or bob.shultes@townofcary.org.

Page-Walker; you can view the works and share refreshments.

Protect Your Pet

In our Town, dogs and cats must be on a leash when they are outside their owner’s property. Leashes protect your pet from potential accidents and injury. Whether you and your four-legged friend are strolling in your neighborhood or jogging on our greenways, Fido or Fifi must be on a leash. If you choose not to obey the law, you could be fined up to $250.

Pet owners are also required to pick up their pet’s waste. Pet waste is not only unsightly, stinky and harmful to our environment but it’s quite a pain when you step in it. So scoop when your pet poops!

“Leashes” at www.townofcary.org I (919) 319-4517

Permitted Work?

If you’re having work done to your existing home and the work requires permits or inspections, we’ve re-organized our Inspections & Permits Department. As a result you’ll have fewer visits from our inspectors, which means less disruption. Through our newly-formed Residential Multi-Trade Division rather than having as many as four code enforcement officials inspect residential projects (one inspector each for building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical), we can, in most cases, send one professional who can inspect in multiple trades. The safety and success of your renovations, additions, remodels, and HVAC / hot water heater change-outs is the focus of this new Division. And, always call us with your permitting questions before beginning any work: (919) 469-4046.
