August Events

Park After Dark featuring Mint Julep Jazz Band
August 11, 7-9 p.m. | Old Library Site
Enjoy a fun night out in Downtown Cary with your significant other, a group of friends, or just fly solo. Come listen to the wonderful sounds of the Mint Julep Jazz Band as they recreate the hot jazz sounds of the 1920s, 30s, and early 40s through arrangements based on original recordings from the jazz age and swing era. Local food trucks and beer and wine vendors will be on site as well. Outside food and beverages are allowed. Outside alcohol is not allowed. A limited selection of free, low-level lawn chairs will be available. Personal lawn chairs are also allowed. See additional dates and all the details at www.townofcary.org/parkafterdark.

Hometown Spirit Nominees Wanted!

We are accepting nominations for our Hometown Spirit Award from August 25 through September 22.  Nominees must be age 21 or older and should demonstrate qualities such as helping neighbors, showing hospitality, promoting a sense of community, and displaying patriotism. A panel will select the award winner after the nomination period ends. All nominees will be recognized at a reception and the Hometown Spirit award winner will be announced in November. See www.townofcary.org/spirit to enter your nominee online or call (919) 469-4011 for more information.

What's Happening?

As summer turns to fall, new events are being announced all the time! Get the latest info by following us on social media and checking www.townofcary.org/calendar.

Cary It Green

No After-hours Dropoff

If the Citizen’s Convenience Center is closed, please consider other waste and recycling drop-off options. Search your item in the Cary Collects Waste Wizard at www.townofcary.org/collects, find alternate drop-off locations near you, or plan to visit the center during normal operation hours. Never leave materials outside the gates of the Center. This is considered illegal dumping and unsafe for others and the environment.

Let the Rain Drain

With hurricane season upon us, now is a good time to make sure rainwater that falls on your property drains away from your house. During the next summer shower, watch what happens. If water is ponding, unclog gutters and yard inlets (if you have one) to help that rain flow freely to the storm drain system and make its way to the nearby creek.

Save the Date for our Fall Environmental Outreach Programs

• September 11 – Day of Service Event. Help us honor the legacy of September 11 by planting vegetable gardens for our first responders.

• October 2 – Farm to Fork Celebration and Fund Raiser. Join us for an evening of dancing and dining at our historic organic teaching farm.

• October 9 – Fall Litter Sweep. Volunteers needed to help us in this Town-wide environmental service project.

Help Our Town Stay Clean & Green

Spot some litter? Let us know by calling 311. Want to volunteer for a cleanup? Search “Spruce” at www.townofcary.org to checkout a litter collection kit.

Meter Boxes

As you care for your yard this summer, avoid running the lawn mower over your meter box, as doing so can damage it. And keep the meter box free of debris, including leaves, mulch, grass clippings, and dirt. These measures help ensure the meter box provides accurate, timely water use data.

Spot Leaks with Aquastar

Did you know you can use Aquastar's custom alerts to keep an eye on abnormal usage at your address? This simple alert system can help you spot leaks early. Visit www.townofcary.org/aquastaralerts to learn how. While you're in your account, consider signing up for paperless utility billing! From your Digipay account homepage, click on the "Paperless" toggle to begin receiving your bill by email. Each month, you'll receive an email notification about your amount due and a link to our online system where you can see your bill, view your usage history, or pay online. You can choose a one-time payment option or set up recurring payments with a debit/credit card or e-check.

Close the Door!

Did you know a closed door is one of the best pieces of firefighting and life-saving equipment in a home? It can reduce fire growth and spread, limit damage to your home, and possibly save lives. Most home fire deaths are the direct result of smoke inhalation and closing your bedroom door while sleeping reduces this risk dramatically. If you must leave a room while escaping a fire, closing the door behind you limits fire damage to your home and gives you more time to escape your home.

If you sleep with the bedroom door closed, install smoke alarms inside and outside the bedroom. For best protection, make sure all smoke alarms are interconnected so when one smoke alarm sounds, they all sound.

We remain firmly committed to crafting the park that you asked for and, while we build it, we want to keep you in the know. We invite you to join our electronic news list to get all the latest updates.
