Roundabout Cary 5K

We’re putting the finishing touches on the new downtown roundabouts that will bookend Chatham Street. Before you drive them, get up close and personal with them at our Roundabout Cary 5K on July 27.
We’ll have a brief dedication ceremony followed by a 3.1-mile run that takes participants from one roundabout to the other and then along Academy Street. In addition to the roundabouts, some of the newest additions to our downtown will be featured along the race route: The Cary Theater, Downtown Cary Farmers Market, the Cary Arts Center, and the Downtown Performance Green. Light refreshments and entertainment will follow the run and complete the event.
Reduced-priced registration is open now through July 24; walk-up registration will be accepted, but a commemorative T-shirt is not guaranteed. Proceeds from the run will benefit the Town’s Relief for Recreation Scholarship Fund.
Not a runner? There are still opportunities available to sponsor and volunteer.

We’ll have a Kid’s World, where children can enjoy make-and-take crafts and cool off in the misting tent. Another special area will be designated for community-based cultural groups who provide services to Cary citizens.

Do Your Part: Keep Easements Clear

We routinely clear utility easements to prevent tree root penetration into sewer lines, which causes blockages and overflows. While we will notify property owners in advance of easement work, we ask that you keep easements clear all the time.

Watch for Me NC

In collisions with cars, pedestrians are the losers. In fact, pedestrians hit at 40 mph have an 85 percent chance of dying from sustained injuries.
Safety is a shared responsibility. When you are driving, yield to pedestrians. State law requires drivers to use the horn whenever a pedestrian may be affected by a turn, stop or start from a parked position. If the pedestrian does not stop, the driver must. The safest driver yields right of way to a pedestrian whether the pedestrian is entitled to it or not.
When you’re walking, make yourself known. Walk in well-lit areas, carry a flashlight, and wear reflective clothing. Always stick to the sidewalk; if there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and as far from the road as you can.
Witness unsafe driving practices in non-emergency situations? When it’s safe to do so, give a call to our Road Watch Hotline: (919) 319-4521.

Control Your FOG

When cooking this summer, never put Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) down the drain.
Instead, pour cooled oils into a plastic container with a screw-cap lid and save for recycling with our curbside cooking oil collection program.
Pouring FOG down the drain can lead to sewer overflows, causing wastewater to back up in homes or directly into waterways.
Call (919) 469-4090 to schedule a free pick-up.

Splash Safely

Summer has heated up, and it’s time get outside and enjoy your backyard or neighborhood pool.
Remember that all residential pools must be surrounded by a fence. For additional safety, consider installing an alarm that is activated when movement is detected in the water.
Read the complete Inspections & Permit’s guide by searching “Swimming Pools” at www.townofcary.org or call (919) 469-4043 with questions.
Make sure at least one person in your family is properly trained and certified to do CPR. When at the pool, use the buddy system and go with a friend, neighbor or family member.
Before you get in the water, be sure to locate floatation devices and life-saver rings as well as a working telephone in case you have to dial 911.
Get in the know and evaluate your pool safety skills at www.poolsafety.gov.

Don't Hang Up!

With the advent of 10-digit dialing, it’s easy to dial 911 in error.
If you do, don’t hang up! Stay on the line to explain there is no emergency. If a 911 call is answered with a hang-up, communication officers are required to contact the caller or dispatch an officer to the call’s estimated location to make sure you’re OK.
Calling 911 should be reserved for emergencies that pose an immediate threat to life, property or welfare. For non-emergencies, call (919) 469-4012.

Fire Station 8 Coming on Board

Construction is complete at our newest Fire Station, 408 Mills Park Drive. We’ll use the month of July to transition into the new building and complete key training.
By August, Fire Station 8 will be fully operational. There are gobs of green features, including rooftop solar panels that offset energy consumption by 13 percent. There is permanent space for the District II Police Substation, which features a roll call room and a scheduled 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. presence.
If you are in the area, stop by and take a tour to meet the men and women who are proud to serve you every day.

Your Carts Have a Purpose

Town curbside carts have specific uses, none of which  involve your yard waste.
Please put yard waste at the curb in 32-gallon or less reusable containers with handles;  paper bags; or securely tied bundles that weigh less than 40 pounds each.
Using your cart that is otherwise empty might sound like a good idea but can result in materials not being collected or damaged carts. Unfortunately, yard waste mixed with trash or recycling will not be collected.

Fire Prevention: When it Roars, Go Indoors!

If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you, so no place outside is safe. Safe shelters are substantial buildings with electricity or plumbing or an enclosed, metal-topped vehicle with the windows up.
Once inside, stay off corded phones, computers and other electrical equipment that puts you in direct contact with electricity. Avoid sinks, baths and faucets. Stay indoors for at least 30 minutes after you hear the last sound of thunder.
