Fun and Fireworks Planned for the Fourth

Join us for an old-fashioned celebration of our nation’s birth at Fred G. Bond Metro Park. Sure to be lots of fun for the whole family, the day begins with a parent/child fishing tournament followed by a “Parade in the Park” and then a whole host of games and competitions from donut eating to watermelon seed spitting.

Head over to Koka Booth Amphitheatre for patriotic performances and music combined with kid’s activities, a Ferris wheel, an ice cream eating contest, a scavenger hunt and more! The evening concludes with a free concert by the NC Symphony and fireworks over Symphony Lake in a setting that is second to none.

Can’t join us for the Fourth? The Cary Town Band and Applause! Cary Youth Theatre will perform on July 3 as part of our annual Independence Eve Celebration. The free concert starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Sertoma Amphitheatre in Bond Park.

Wherever you choose to celebrate, please be sure to safely secure your pets in your home or backyard. For more on all of our festivities, search “Independence Day” at www.townofcary.org or call (919) 469-4061.

Holiday Interrupts Collection

Town offices will close Thursday, July 4; we’ll operate under a slightly different pick-up schedule that week for our solid waste, yard waste and blue week recycling.

Tuesday’s collection will be on July 1. Wednesday’s collection will be on July 2. Thursday’s collection will be July 3. Friday’s collection will remain unchanged.

For more, search “Holiday Collection” at www.townofcary.org or call (919) 469-4090.

Bond Lake Boathouse Opens

Check out the beauty of Bond Park from a new perspective: Bond Lake.

Rentals include: pedal boats, rowboats, canoes, kayaks and sailboats. For everyone’s safety, children 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult and wear a personal flotation device.

Like keeping your feet on the ground? Stay on shore and bring your fishing pole and bait to the lake to see what you can reel in. Bait is also available for purchase at the boathouse.

For more, search “Bond Park” at www.townofcary.org.

Your Water Quality Report is Online

For the first time, Cary utility customers will no longer receive automatically a hard copy of the annual Water Quality Report, saving tens of thousands of utility ratepayers’ dollars.

Visit waterreport.townofcary.org instead. There, you’ll access the full report that covers all drinking water quality tests performed during 2012—over 50,000 of them to be exact!

We are proud to report that after so many analyses, your water remains safe and of high quality. We remain committed to providing drinking water that consistently meets all state and federal regulatory standards.

If you’d prefer a paper copy, call (919) 469-4090; copies are also available for review at the Finance Customer Service Window in Cary Town Hall and at the Public Works & Utilities Customer Service Window at the Garmon Operations Center. For more on water quality, visit the Public Works & Utilities section at www.townofcary.org or call (919) 469-4090.

Cary Teen Council: Apply Now!

Know a teen who may be interested in joining hundreds of peers for social and recreational activities, community service, leadership and team- building fun?

Applications for the Cary Teen Council, the largest council of its type in the state, are accepted throughout the entire month of June for rising 6-11 graders.

Search “Teen Council” at www.townofcary.org for an application and more details.

Help Deter Crimes of Opportunity

Cary is one of the safest communities in the country, but there are plenty of people who are glad to accept an invite to steal from unlocked cars and open garages, or even come into your home via an open garage and interior door.

These “crimes of opportunity” happen too often, including here in Cary. So, be sure to lock your home, garage, and car doors. If you see your neighbors’ open, knock on their door and encourage them to do the same.

Search “Summer Safety Tips” at www.townofcary.org for more.

Irrigation Ins & Outs

By State law, any irrigation system valued at $2,500 or more must be installed by a state licensed irrigation contractor. Consider using a contractor who is also WaterSense-certified and knows the latest water efficient technology and practices.

Already own an irrigation system? Play “Don’t Drown the Ground,” an online educational game, and reward yourself with a free irrigation audit and up to seven precision spray nozzles while supplies last. Search “Beat the Peak” at www.townofcary.org and click on the water guard to start playing and winning.

Hurricane Season Starts June 1

Are you ready for nature’s biggest summer storms? Hurricanes can cause outages, wind damage, flooding and more.

Create a disaster kit for each family member, including pets. It should be easily portable and include food, clothes, medicine, cash, sensitive documents, and a flashlight with batteries. Pack enough supplies for each person to last at least three days.

A Wake County resident? Go to www.readywake.com and sign-up to receive free weather-related alerts by phone, text or email.

For more, search “Severe Weather” at www.townofcary.org. or visit www.ready.gov.

Be a Block Leader

Knock, Knock! Help bring conservation to your neighbor’s doorstep.

As part of our Block Leader program, you’ll distribute materials to raise awareness of the Town’s conservation programs. Currently, about 100 volunteers serve over 7,000 homes in our community.

To join or learn more, call (919) 469-4301 or search “Block Leader” at www.townofcary.org.

Dial In to Cary

No matter the reason, it’s sometimes physically impossible to attend a public meeting.

The Cary Town Council is now allowing participation by phone in the Town’s Boards & Commissions meetings.

A limited amount of people may participate by phone; to reserve your spot, call (919) 469-4011 by noon on the meeting date.

Learn more: search “Public Electronic Participation” at www.townofcary.org.

App Pinpoints Public Transit Location

Using public transportation in Cary just became easier thanks to the addition of C-Tran to the GoTriangle’s real-time prediction app, TransLōc.

The free, GPS-driven app, available for Android, Apple and Blackberry devices, pinpoints C-Tran Fixed Route buses across all six of C-Tran’s service lines. Through the app, users can see specific stops along each fixed route, read transit system announcements, and provide feedback on their riding experience.

To download, visit live.gotriangle.org from your mobile device, or scan this QR Code. Riders without smartphones can still access real-time bus information by either visiting live.gotriangle.org or texting “GoLive [Stop Identification Number]” to 41411.

   Questions? Call (919) 469-4080.

More Concerts at Bond Park's Sertoma Amphitheatre

The Spring/Summer Sertoma Series generally draws hundreds to Bond Park to enjoy outdoor local entertainment. This season, thanks to support from Pinecone, the Piedmont Council of Traditional Music, we are pleased to present even more concerts at Sertoma Amphitheatre.

While the 10-concert series opened in May, this month you can check out quite a variety of performances, including the Triangle Brass Band on June 28, and the Brian Horton Quartet on July 13. The series closes with performances by The Hollow Crown on August 1-4.

Sertoma Series concerts require no tickets, and are free and open to the public. While picnics, lawn chairs, blankets and leashed pets are welcomed, alcohol is not permitted.

Check out line-up by searching “Sertoma Series” at www.townofcary.org.

Fire Prevention: Safe Celebrations

The Fourth of July wouldn’t be the same without fireworks.

Although we encourage you to attend sanctioned firework displays like the ones at Booth Amphitheatre, if you decide to light your own, know the facts.

Legal fireworks in our state include snake/grow worms, smoke devices, wire sparklers, trick noisemakers, and snappers and sprays. Anything that explodes or is projected into the air— firecrackers, roman candles and aerial fireworks— is illegal.

Be sure to buy from a reputable vendor. Never relight a dud, and soak spent devices in water before disposing in the trash.

   Questions? Call (919) 460-4958.
