This Month's Headlines:

Building Codes Save Lives!

May is Building Safety Awareness Month, a time for us to help you, our citizens, and businesses understand what it takes to create and maintain safe and sustainable structures. This year’s theme is Building Codes Save Lives! All communities need building codes to protect citizens from disasters like fire and weather-related events. Building codes are the best way of protecting homes, offices, schools and other facilities. Celebrate Building Safety Awareness Month in Cary by following these tips:

  • Install at least one smoke alarm in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on each floor. Test alarms regularly, replace batteries annually and replace each alarm every 10 years.
  • Develop a family action plan.
  • Create a disaster supply kit. Be sure the necessities are restored every six months.
  • If considering a swimming pool purchase, contact the Town first to determine exactly what permits are needed and what requirements you must follow.

Grilling Safety Tips

  • Propane/charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
  • Place the grill a safe distance from the house, deck and away from leaves or overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets at least three feet away.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing any grease or fat that has built up.
  • Never leave the grill unattended.
  • Always make sure that the gas grill lid is open before lighting the grill.
  • Keep charcoal starter fluid away from children and heat sources.
  • Let the coals cool completely before disposing in a metal container.
  • Never store the used coals inside or next to a structure.
