Area Conversations Focus on Your Backyard

We know you care about Cary, especially when it comes to what’s happening in your own backyard. So make plans to attend an upcoming Area Conversation as part of our Imagine Cary comprehensive community plan efforts.
In the month of June, we’ll host four Area Conversations—central, northern, southern and western—where we’ll focus on the key topics of that geographic section of Cary. We’ll talk about the specific area’s vision for the future, including its character development, and identify strengths and opportunities related to its physical conditions.
Information gathered at the Area Conversations will be merged with feedback from the May 2 Summit on the Future and used to create the Cary Community Plan, a document that will guide the long-range vision of Cary over the next 20-30 years.
For the date and location of the Area Conversation closest to you, visit www.imaginecary.org or call (919) 469-4082.

Yard Waste Reminder

Just finished a day of landscaping? Yard waste—like grass clippings, brush, leaves and limbs—is collected on your regular garbage collection day and should be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. in reusable containers, paper bags or securely tied bundles that weigh under 40 pounds.
Branches and limbs placed at the curb should be no longer than 4 feet or larger than 4 inches in diameter. Yard waste piles should not exceed 240 cubic feet (8 feet long by 5 feet wide by 6 feet deep). Unfortunately, yard waste in plastic bags or mixed with soil and rock cannot be collected.
Can’t wait for your curbside pickup? Yard waste is also accepted at our Citizens Convenience Center, 313 N. Dixon Avenue. For more, search “Yard Waste” at www.townofcary.org or call (919) 469-4090.

Search “Beat the Peak” at www.townofcary.org and call (919) 469-4090 to join us in being water conscious.

Fall Youth Sports Registration

Registration forms are available June 3 for youth baseball (ages 8-16) and softball (ages 8-17) leagues, with registration opening June 17. Practices begin in August, and games start in September.
For more, search “Youth Athletics” at www.townfocary.org.

Dog Days at Bond Park

Bring Fido and come out for a furry, fun-filled day on June 1. We’ll have a Frisbee Disc Competition, Dog Wash, and dozens of pet-friendly vendors, including adoption agencies.
Animal Control will host a Rabies Vaccine/Microchipping clinic for dogs and cats. Microchips are $10 and Rabies Vaccines are $5; cash only, please.
For more, search “Dog Days” at www.townofcary.org.

We're Recruiting

We’re looking for citizens to fill vacancies on Town Council’s  Economic Development Committee and six boards and commissions.
Serve on these boards, and perform a community service using your skills and interests to make a difference. Members will be selected from within Cary’s corporate limits and, in some instances, from Cary’s ETJ.
Search “Boards and Commissions” at www.townofcary.org for a description and application. Applications must be received by June 30. Questions? Call (919) 319-4508.

Practice Proper Petiquette

We care about our four-legged friends and want to help keep pets and their owners safe.
All domesticated animals are required to be leashed when outside of their individual owner’s property; failure to be responsible could result in a fine up to $250.
Additionally, cats and dogs four months of age and older need to be vaccinated and must display a Town-issued Pet ID tag. Pet ID tags can be obtained at any community center for a one-time fee ranging from $5-$50.
Out and about with your pet? Be neighborly and remember to pick up pet waste. Not only is it unsightly, but it’s harmful to the environment and can impact water quality. Consider using biodegradable bags to be even more Earth-friendly.
Finally, each year at the beginning of spring, our Animal Control officers field numerous barking complaints. Be respectful to your neighbors and help keep the bark to a minimum. In fact, it’s against Town Ordinance when a dog barks for 15 minutes in any 30-minute period.
To reduce the bite of your dog’s bark, never leave your dog outside unattended. Consider installing a doggie door so that your pet may come and go as it pleases.
Help contain your puppy chatter by safely introducing your dog to neighbors and friends; a quick pat on the head can sometimes calm the dog and reduce noise.
Make time to play and exercise with your dog, including a trip to our Dog Park located at 2050 NW Maynard Road.
For more, search “Pets” at www.townofcary.org and call (919) 319-4517.

Oasis: Your Life Saver

Oasis is a program designed to help those who find themselves in financial hardship with their Town of Cary utility bill. Dorcas Ministries administers the program in partnership with the Town of Cary.
If you need one-time financial assistance, call (919) 469-9861 or search “Oasis” at our website, www.townofcary.org.
Want to help? Donations are accepted at (919) 469-4050.

Please take time to review it, and then share your comments at the May 23 and June 13 Budget Public Hearings as part of the regular Town Council meetings. Meetings are held at Cary Town Hall, 316 N. Academy Street, and begin at 6:30 p.m.
By law, Town Council must adopt a balanced budget by June 30.

Book a Home Safety Assessment

If you’ve planned a summer vacation, you might be interested in protecting your home without relying solely on alarm systems. Our Crime Prevention Team is available to conduct complementary residential assessments at your home or business.
Once scheduled, a police officer will go on location to identify physical weaknesses in and around your home or business and offer low-cost suggestions to improve safety and security. These surveys are best conducted during the daylight hours and last about an hour.
Schedule your home safety evaluation by calling (919) 469-4324.

Greenway Connection Grows in Cary

Get from Umstead State Park to Bond Park—seven miles total— by foot and bike thanks to the completion of a segment of the Black Creek Greenway. We’ll host a dedication June 1.
As part of the long-term plan, the Black Creek Greenway will connect to the White Oak Creek Greenway that begins at Bond Park and connects to the American Tobacco Trail, the 23-mile long trail that links Durham, Chatham and Wake counties.
We have 60+ miles of paved greenways/multi-use paths. Search “Hike and Bike” at www.townofcary.org to map your route.

Fire Prevention: Grill Safely

Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, and no summer is complete without a cookout.
Be sure to keep your grill away from siding and deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Do not use a grill on a porch or balcony on any level of a building. Establish a three-foot “kid/pet-free zone” around the grilling area to reduce the chances of burn incidents.
Most importantly, never leave a grill unattended.
