Springtime Safety

On the Greenway

During this time of COVID-19, we are especially grateful for our greenways, which can offer a place of respite. Please remember the following safety measures when visiting the Town's greenways to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience:

  • Bring your mask and be prepared to wear it over your mouth and nose when passing others.
  • Keep a safe distance of six (6) feet between you and other greenway users.
  • No motorized vehicles of any kind are allowed on trails.
  • Maximum speed for bikes is 15 miles per hour.
  • Bike riders must yield to walkers and runners who have the right of way.
  • Announce yourself before passing (on the left) and warn trail users as you approach from behind.
  • If you stop, please step off the trail.
  • Remove your pet's waste.
  • Keep pets on short leash. Use a six-foot maximum leash length.
  • Walk pets on the right-hand shoulder.
  • Alcohol is prohibited on greenways.

Please report any suspicious incidents to 911. Thanks for your help in keeping yourself and others safe! www.townofcary.org/greenways

In the Backyard

Warmer days call for hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill, while cooler nights beckon roasting marshmallows by the fire. Enjoy both safely this season by following the advice of Cary's Fire Department.

Fire Pits

Prevent fire or burn injury with these simple steps:

  • Make sure the fire pit is at least fifteen feet away from your house and anything that can burn like bushes.
  • Keep a garden hose within easy access of the fire pit.
  • Store matches and lighters out of children’s sight and reach.
  • Do not use a fire pit to burn rubbish or yard waste.
  • Use a metal screen over wood-burning fires to keep sparks from floating out.
  • Closely watch children when the fire pit is in use.
  • Turn off or put out fires before you leave the backyard.

Grilling

Make safe outdoor cooking a priority this season by following these measures:

  • Move the grill away from siding, decking, and other things that can catch fire.
  • Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill when it is hot.
  • Stay with the grill the entire time you are cooking.
  • Keep your grill clean so leftover grease and fat will not catch on fire.

Cary It Green

Grasscycling

Why bag it when you can mow and go? Consider leaving grass clippings on your lawn to put nutrients and organic matter naturally back into the soil. It can help reduce your fertilizer needs and water loss to evaporation. Your grass will thank you!

Holiday Week of May 30

Garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection for all households will move one day later the week of May 30. And, the Citizen’s Convenience Center will be closed on May 30. View or print your collection schedule using Cary Collects at www.townofcary.org/collects.

Friendly Reminders

When visiting the Citizen’s Convenience Center, please follow these safety measures:

  • Wear your mask.
  • Follow posted directions and speed.
  • Maintain six feet of distance between you and others.
  • Be prepared to unload your own materials in the correct area.
  • Keep children in vehicle.
Sprinkler Spruce Up

When starting up your automatic irrigation system, be sure to have an installed backflow assembly that is tested annually. Check for leaks and misdirected spray heads, and set your control box to water as needed according to the Alternate Day Watering (ADW) Ordinance:

  • Odd Addresses - Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays
  • Even Addresses - Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays

Please note that irrigation systems that use reclaimed water are exempt from the ADW Ordinance. Remember to set your rain sensor to “activate.” Happy watering!

Cures for Wet Ground

Tired of that soggy spot in your yard? Consider addressing it with a “green” technique that restores the natural movement of water by slowing, capturing, or absorbing rainfall. A rain garden, rain barrel, riparian buffer -- which option best suites your yard? For more options and information, visit www.townofcary.org/yardwater.

Programs & Events

While most Town facilities remain closed, some Cary Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources (PRCR) facilities are open with COVID-19 safety measures in place, and limited in-person programming is being offered alongside our virtual programs. Find up-to-date information about current offerings on www.mycary.org.

And, visit www.townofcary.org/facilities to view the operating status of individual PRCR facilities.

Remember, all parks, greenways, courts, and fields remain open. Don't forget your mask when you visit!

NEW! Two temporary three-hole foot golf courses have been placed at White Oak and Walnut St. parks. These courses will remain open through mid-April, and balls will be provided at the first tee. Enjoy!

As the weather warms, we know you are ready to gather outside safely with family and friends and, now, you can do that in the perfect spot! We are now accepting reservations at several Town of Cary picnic shelters. Don’t wait to book your space! Visit www.townofcary.org/shelters for complete details, including how to make reservations.
