Have A Night Out ... On Us

Come out for our annual Cary Night Out on May 1 from 5-8 p.m. on Chatham Street between
Academy Street and Harrison Avenue. Join police, fire and emergency personnel for an evening of free fun and food! Explore police and fire vehicles, learn about our safety programs, watch K9 demonstrations, register for a free home safety inspection and cheer on your favorite Cary police officer or firefighter during the strength and agility competition. We’ll also have a kids zone.

One reason our Town consistently ranks as one of the safest places in the nation is because of the open and outstanding relationship between police and community. So, come to downtown Cary, meet your neighbors and enjoy a good time alongside our men and women in blue and red.

Electronic Records

We’re always looking to streamline services; in keeping with those efforts, our Police Department has made available electronically a significant portion of its police records. Visit Police 2 Citizen or P2C at policereports.townofcary.org for a real-time database of incidents processed by our PD. Search by date, incident type, report number or name of persons involved. Once populated, records can be printed or emailed.  If at first you can’t find the information you’re looking for, remember it can take up to 48 hours for a report to be entered into the database. If you don’t have a computer or can’t locate a specific police report online, call our automated Report Request Line at (919) 460-4902.

Annually, we receive close to 11,000 phone requests for copies of police reports; moving police records online could reduce the Records Division’s call volume by up to 70 percent. Please note that in order to comply with State and local laws, some sensitive reports may not be available online.

Root, Root, Root For The Home Team

From now through May 15, get your reduced rate tickets for the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship games that will be played at our USA Baseball National Training Complex, 200 Brooks Park Lane. Adult tickets are $9 each; a championship pass is $27 and includes admission to all games throughout the championship; you can purchase tickets at www.etix.com or www.ncaa.com/tickets. After May 15 and during the tournament from May 23-30, prices rise to $12 for an adult ticket and $32 for a Championship Pass. This year for walk-ups only we are offering $7 tickets for ages 12 and under and for seniors 55+, $7 Wake County resident tickets and $1 Championship Day tickets for all. Gates open 1 1/2 hours before the first pitch of the day. Parking is free; seating is first come, first served. We’ll announce participating teams on or around May 17.

In December 2013, the NCAA named our Town a host city for multiple championship games, including the NCAA Division II Baseball Championships through 2018. We’re proud to share that this is the seventh consecutive year we’ll host the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship, making it the third longest run of any city in the 45-year history of the championship.

Share the Road

May is National Bike Month, and it’s a great time to talk about our designation as a ‘Bicycle Friendly Community’. Cyclists are a common sight on Cary’s streets; this is their right under North Carolina law. In fact, the law defines bicycles as vehicles, which means that cyclists have the same rights–and responsibilities–as automobilists.

We’d like to remind you of the following basic rules for cyclists:
Always ride on the right side of the road and with traffic.
Don’t ride after dark without lights.
Obey traffic laws, stop signs and stop lights.
Ride your bike as you drive your car.

Remember:  Same Roads, Same Rights, Same Responsibilities. Let’s keep Cary ‘bicycle friendly’!

Foster a Pet

Interested in fostering homeless animals? Then come out to our Foster 101 & Adoption
Day on May 16 at Cary’s AniMall, 1105 Walnut Street, from 12:30-4 p.m. Our Police Department, Companion Animals Resources & Education Team and AniMall are hosting the event. Area rescues and shelters will be on site to speak about fostering a dog, cat or little critter. Actual foster families and animals in need of a home or adoption will also be there. You’ll learn what it takes to be a foster parent/family and see which group or type of animal is best suited for your home.

Foster parents volunteer to keep a homeless pet in their homes temporarily while it awaits adoption. The animal learns valuable social skills by being around a foster parent/family. Some families provide a warm and comforting place for young puppies or kittens to grow until they are old enough for adoption. Others may foster a sick or injured animal that needs a calm and soothing place to heal.

Each case and animal is unique, and fostering requirements vary by each rescue or shelter. If you love animals and can offer a safe place to one, come learn more at our first-time event.

Our FY2016 Budget

We appreciated your feedback during October’s Budget Input Month. Now, we’re developing the Manager’s recommended FY2016 budget that will be presented at our Town Council meeting on May 5 and posted to our website by May 6. We welcome your comments on the recommended budget at our May 21 and June 11 Council meetings. By law, our Council must adopt a balanced budget by June 30, 2015.

Irrigation Checkup

We’re bringing back by popular demand our free irrigation performance check-ups starting in May. We’ll help you get your automatic system ready to water efficiently and effectively to achieve your landscaping goals. Call (919) 380-2147 to sign up.

Keep it Loose

Don’t let your efforts go to waste by bagging your recyclables. Except for shredded paper, place all items directly in your cart, not in plastic, so it can be recycled. If you’ve got questions, call us at (919) 469-4090.

Erratum

Last month, we pulled an early April Fool’s and, luckily, got caught. We incorrectly noted the Spring Daze rain date as April 27, when, in fact, it’s April 26. Mea culpa. To recap: Spring Daze is April 25 in Bond Park. In the event of rain, it’s April 26, same location, from 1-6 p.m. See you there!

Water Work in Stoneybrook

In April, we’ll be in the Stoneybrook Estates subdivision (Oakridge Road, Willow Brook Drive and Hampton Valley Road) to install a new water line. Stoneybrook residents will have access to the area throughout the work, which we expect to complete in fall 2015. Contact paul.webster@townofcary.org with questions or concerns.

CIAA Games

We’re proud to host the CIAA Conference Tournament. From April 30-May 2, come out to our USA Baseball National Training Complex to see if Winston Salem State University can capture their fifth straight title!

Hot Tips: Put a Lid on Cooking Fires

Did you know cooking is the leading cause of home fires? And cooking fires happen most often when we leave our pots and pans unattended on the stove? We’ve got a few tips to help you cook safely. If a fire occurs in a pot or pan while you are cooking, place an oven mitt on your hand and slowly slide a lid or  cookie sheet over the top of the pot or pan. Turn off the burner and allow the pan to cool completely before removing the lid. Do not attempt to move pans or pots filled with hot oil and never use water, baking soda or flour when trying to extinguish the fire. They can cause the fire to spread farther.

If you have any doubts about whether you can safely put out a cooking fire, quickly leave the residence, close the door behind you and call 9-1-1 from outside your home.

Buy a Bin

Turn your kitchen scraps into organic fertilizer with a home compost bin. From April 6-May 6 we’re selling compost bins online for $45. Each bin comes with a guidebook. After May 6, all purchased bins will be shipped to the Town; we’ll contact those who ordered one to make pick-up arrangements. Composting can help reduce landfill waste and improve the soil quality of our community. The bins are a great way to help you to live and save green. Order yours today!
