Signs Are in Full Bloom

If your spring cleaning to-do list has yielded stacks of unwanted but usable items, you might be considering a yard sale. Before you start posting signs and welcoming your neighbors, please take a moment to review Cary’s sign rules. In order to keep our neighborhoods neat and attractive, we’ve set some guidelines on quantities of signs, sign locations, and sign sizes.

   • Two sign maximum. One sign is allowed on the lot where the yard sale is located and an additional sign can be located on a different private property with the owner’s permission (except public common areas).

   • No trees, please. Never put signs on light poles, trees, traffic signals, medians, street corners or in ditches or intersections (public rights-of-way).

   • Less is more. The size limit for signs is 4 square feet in area per side and 42 inches in height.

   • Wait until Friday. Signs can only be displayed on the weekend. Put them out on Friday after 5 p.m. and remove them by 8 a.m. on Monday.

To read our sign ordinance or learn more about yard signs in Cary, visit www.townofcary.org. If you have questions, call (919) 469-4082.

Budget Update

We’d like to thank all of you who participated in February’s Budget Input Month. We received record amounts of comments, all of which are captured at “Budget Development” at www.townofcary.org.

The Town Manager’s Recommended FY2014 budget, effective July 1, is being developed. It will be presented at the regular Town Council meeting May 9 and posted to our website by May 10.

You’re invited to comment on the recommended budget at the May 23 and June 13 Town Council meetings at 6:30 p.m. at Cary Town Hall. By law, Town Council must adopt a balanced budget by June 30, 2013.

Cary Community Plan: Your Voice Shapes Our Future

We’ve launched an unprecedented, multi-year effort to prepare a new community plan. Imagine Cary is an opportunity for everyone who cares about your Town to assess our community today, understand the choices for the future and create policies to match that vision.

Join us May 2 for the Summit on the Future, the big community kick-off meeting for Imagine Cary.

We’ve lined up a nationally recognized guest speaker and well-respected scholar in urban planning to lead the interactive and engaging event.

The event is free but seating is limited. Reserve your spot at www.imaginecary.org and please share your passion for Cary to help us reach our community’s potential.

Can’t make the Summit? Stay updated on the Cary Community Plan and see other upcoming engagement activities at www.imaginecary.org or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ ImagineCary.

It's That Time of the Year...

Healthy outdoor water conservation starts with a check-up! Before irrigation season starts, inspect your system for leaks. A broken spray head can waste up to 20 gallons per minute. Be sure your automatic irrigation system has a rain sensor installed and set for ¼-inch in accordance with our Rain Sensor Ordinance, and never be wasteful and water during a rainfall.

For more irrigation tips, search “Water Conservation” at www.townofcary.org.

Non-Profits Receive Annual Lazy Daze Grants

We are proud to have recently awarded 31 local non-profit organizations with $37,000 in grants, thanks to a successful 2012 Lazy Daze Festival. With this year’s grants, we’ve returned over $500,000 to the Cary community through the program in its 32-year history.

To be considered for future grants, qualifying organizations must be Cary-based with a federal tax ID number and detail an upcoming project or initiative earmarked for funding. Priority is given to grant applicants with a cultural arts focus or that support the Town of Cary’s downtown initiatives.

Applications are received in the fall following Lazy Daze and are awarded in the winter.

Check out this year’s recipients and the projects they identified in their grant application by searching “Lazy Daze Grants” at www.townofcary.org. For more application information, call (919) 462-3864.

Fire Prevention: Practice Your Home Escape Plan

Take advantage of spring’s seasonable temps; make a home escape plan and execute a fire drill.

To create the home escape plan, draw a map of each level of the house and mark all doors and windows. Identify two ways out of every room, if possible. Discuss the plan with everyone in your household. Once outside, designate a meeting place like a tree, light pole or mailbox.

During a fire drill, push the smoke alarm button. Practice getting low, closing the door as you leave a room, and crawling out of the home quickly. To end the drill, have everyone meet at your outside meeting place.
