State of Our Town
In January Mayor Harold Weinbrecht delivered his annual State of the Town address. Highlights included mention of our
• strong economy and job market as indicated by our unemployment rate of below four percent;
• robust financial standing as indicated by the highest ratings from all three bond rating agencies;
• state-of-the-art water and wastewater facilities;
• transportation projects that will help congestion in key areas;
• recent changes to our staff and council leadership; and,
• our ongoing planning process, Imagine Cary, in which we encourage citizen involvement.
If you’ve not already, watch the address on our YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/TownofCaryChannel or read it online.

We’re replacing two pedestrian bridges with concrete boardwalks that run parallel to Crescent Green Drive between Crescent Commons and West Lochmere Drive. Similar to the bridges they are replacing, the boardwalks will be 6 feet wide but will be elevated to minimize flooding. During the work, expected to be completed in the summer of 2016, there won’t be a trail detour available.

In January the credit rating agency Fitch affirmed our AAA general obligation bond rating and our AA+ limited obligation refunding bond rating. These top ratings indicate that our financial standing remains strong and ensures that we’re getting the lowest possible interest rates when we issue debt, which is ultimately a savings for our citizens.

Did you know potting soil can catch fire? It can! Our Fire Department regularly responds to calls about fires caused when smokers thought they had extinguished their smoking materials - cigarettes, cigars and pipes - safely in potting soil. While we think of potting soil as dirt, it’s often other materials such as bark, peat moss or Styrofoam, all of which are flammable. The older and drier the potting soil, the more likely it is to burn. When left in potting soil, smoking materials may smolder for hours before igniting. Because planters are often on decks or close to homes, the fire can quickly spread and endanger your life, family and neighbors. When it’s time to put out your smoking material, be certain to use a non-flammable ashtray or a sand- or water-filled metal container.

We’ve begun work on the redesign of a 2.5-mile section of our Black Creek Greenway that runs from West Dynasty Drive to Old Reedy Creek Road. As one of our more popular greenways, this section has been in use for 25 years and is showing its age. We’ll begin work on the redesign once funding is approved. The work will include upgrades so that the trail meets our current standards and includes better drainage and path alignment, relocated trail sections and elevated bridges to reduce flooding.
