Open Gov't Is Good Gov't

As part of our strong and ongoing commitment to openness and transparency, we join the nation March 16-22 in celebrating Sunshine Week – a national initiative to open a dialogue about the importance of open government and freedom of information.
It’s in our Statement of Values and it’s practiced every day.  Public records and open meetings policy, law, and expectations are shared with all new employees and reinforced during numerous training sessions throughout the year. The sun doesn’t just shine on one day or in one week in March; it shines every day as we focus on serving our citizens.
We’ve implemented a number of measures to constantly foster accessibility and transparency, including media surveys, live streaming Town Council meetings, our vast online information resources and our extensive internal education efforts, among others.
Additionally, you can see all current public hearing notices and legal advertising on our new Public Notices Portal, accessible from our homepage.
Sunshine Week provides a great opportunity for us to make sure you know that here at the Town of Cary, we are strongly committed to maintaining a culture of openness and transparency.

Road Project Continues

We continue to be in the design phase of the Green Level West Road Widening Project from NC 540 to NC 55. Join us April 8th for a public information workshop at Cary Fire Station 8, located at 408 Mills Park Drive, anytime from 4:30-7:30 p.m. to review the preferred preliminary design alternate.
The project will provide additional capacity for Cary commuters, improve pedestrian connectivity, and improve bicycle mobility for experienced users. It was supported by 70% of Cary voters as part of the 2012 Community Investment Bonds.

K9 Unit Welcomes New Member

There’s a new dog in town! Our stellar K9 Program welcomes a new K9 officer, Chase, a brindle German Shepherd from Holland. He joins longtime K9 Officer Seth Everett.
Chase was selected as the sixth canine to serve our Town following the untimely passing of K9 Enzo last year. During his career, Enzo met over 3,000 children and their parents during special community events. He is sorely missed.
Our K9 Unit formed in 2005 and consists of three K9 teams. Cary police use K9 teams to track lost persons or fleeing suspects, search for discarded or hidden evidence or contraband, detect illegal drugs, search buildings and help protect officers.
Cary’s K9 team is available for public appearances and demonstrations as well.

Only Rain Down the Drain

There are over 15,000 catch basins in Cary which flow to lakes and streams in the Neuse and Cape Fear River Basins.  Earn volunteer hours by placing decals on storm drains in Cary and help spread the message about keeping our water clean.

Spring Into Action

Take your community pride outside on April 12 as part of our annual Spring Litter Sweep. With sweeps scheduled from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., you can enjoy the outdoors in the beautiful Carolina spring weather while we keep Cary clean and forever green.
Volunteers meet at various sites throughout the day and are given all tools needed for a day of safe and fun beautification, including gloves, vests and trash/recycling bags. Our crews will collect the bags for proper disposal.

Spring Brings Wildlife Friends

Spring is here, so expect to see wildlife babies in your yard or in public spaces.
Coyotes, Canada geese, foxes, black bears and deer cross roads, nest and feed around homes, make noise, and leave droppings. While these are common occurrences, they may interrupt everyday life.
If you’re interested in having wildlife trapped, you should turn to a private pest control agency.
Animal Control will only respond and remove wildlife when they show visible signs of being sick, injured, or pose a legitimate threat to the safety of those around them.
Also, take this time to ensure the animals you do want around—like your dogs and cats—are current on their rabies vaccines and other medical shots.

It doesn’t end there! From 2-4 p.m. on April 17, the Easter Bunny visits the Cary Senior Center for an egg hunt, entertainment and an Easter bonnet competition!
Then, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., the Egg Hunt continues for kids 12 and under with developmental or physical special needs. Bring your Easter basket, meet the Bunny, and get ready to scout the field for lots of colorful Easter eggs.

Hot Tips:Time to Check Smoke Alarms

Working smoke alarms are proven to save lives, cutting the risk of dying in a home fire in half. Fire prevention specialists recommend testing smoke alarms at least once a month and replacing the batteries when you adjust your clocks for Daylight Savings this month.
At this time, also dust or vacuum your smoke alarm to ensure it’s free of debris that could hinder its ability to detect smoke. Some homes may now use smoke alarms with non-replaceable batteries that are designed to be effective up to 10 years.
Don’t forget to still test these at least once a year, and if your alarm chirps a warning that the battery is low, remember you’ll need to replace the entire smoke alarm unit.
