Safe Water

Every year around March, we join neighboring municipalities and temporarily suspend the use of ammonia in our water treatment process. We do this to comply with the State’s recommendation that all water systems that add ammonia temporarily switch to chlorine only. Making that temporary switch helps ensure that our drinking water remains safe, and it is an important part of maintaining our utility system and our award-winning water. If you use water for kidney dialysis, fish aquariums and other chlorine-sensitive uses, be aware that from March 1 to April 19, the water may contain chlorine, ammonia or a mixture of both.

Carpenter Fire Station Road Widening

Carpenter Fire Station Road currently carries about 13,000 vehicles per day. In 2003, the street only carried 3,500 vehicles per day and traffic volumes will continue to increase as northwest Cary continues to grow. Join us at Crosspointe Church, located at 6900 Carpenter Fire Station Road, any time from 4-7 p.m. February 26 to view and weigh in on preliminary plans for improvements to Carpenter Fire Station Road. Town staff will be on site to answer questions and share information about the proposed four-lane, median-divided street and associated pedestrian and bicycle accommodations.

Fix a Leak
Hear it running or see it drip? We’re talking about that leaky toilet or sink. If your answer is “yes,” join the national effort to fix leaks and save water during the Environmental Protection Agency’s Fix a Leak Week from March 18-24. Get your free toilet dye tablets at our Finance window in Town Hall or use food coloring to detect leaks. After all, one in four toilets leaks.

Loose Leaves
Loose leaves still in your yard can be placed in reusable yard waste containers or paper bags for your weekly yard waste collection. If needed, you may rake large piles to the curb for a loose leaf collection by appointment at no charge from February 4 until March 29; call (919) 469-4090 or visit services.townofcary.org to schedule. Don’t forget, leaves can also be great additions to compost piles.

Protect Your Family from Carbon Monoxide

Carbon Monoxide is an invisible killer. It is an odorless, colorless, and tasteless gas that could be lurking in your home. Any home that has gas appliances, burns wood for heat or has an attached garage should also have at least one working carbon monoxide alarm. These alarms alert residents to dangerous levels of the gas so you and your family can escape to fresh air. Carbon monoxide alarms should be placed on each level of the house and outside of sleeping areas. Consider these alarms just as important to your family’s safety as smoke alarms and install one today!

Arbor Day in Cary

Join us on March 16 from 1-3 p.m. as we celebrate the importance of trees with our Arbor Day Celebration at the Downtown Park. A tree dedication ceremony opens the event, followed by free crafts for kids and entertainment. The event is free with local food and drink available for purchase. While supplies last, attendees can pick up a free tree to plant at home, as well as enjoy time for Q&A with our certified arborist. This year, we are celebrating our 36th year as a Tree City USA Community, a designation that we are awarded based on our investment in the management of our urban forests.
