Six Strings Presents

Catch Gary Hannan and Julianne Ankley and their Stories Behind the Songs on March 10 at 8 p.m. at The Cary Theater. In addition to performing their award-winning tunes, they’ll share the inspiration behind what they write. With six Detroit Music Awards to her name, including Outstanding Country Songwriter in 2016 and Outstanding Country Vocalist in 2015, Ankley’s talent is undeniable. A fixture on the Michigan music scene, Ankley performs both solo and with her band The Rogues. She’s known internationally and toured England and France last spring.

Nashville-based Hannan is a multi-platinum songwriter who hails from Zimbabwe; a Grammy nominee, he wrote for singer and television personality Blake Shelton’s 2013 album that won both the Country Music Award and American Country Award that year.  A former soldier who fundraises for vets in his spare time, Hannan’s composed top-ranked songs for other wellknowns such as Joe Nichols, John Michael Montgomery, Craig Morgan, Michael Peterson, Jaron and the Long Road To Love, Montgomery Gentry, Hot Apple Pie and Darryl Worley.

If you love great storytelling and award-winning music, get your tickets for this event!

Celebrate Smart!

In the days leading up to and on St. Patrick’s Day, our police officers will be staffing Booze It & Lose It checkpoints. If you’ll be out celebrating St. Patty’s day, consider taking GoCary through 10 p.m. or calling a taxi. Anytime you see someone driving erratically, save a life and call 911. As importantly, if you know someone is about to drive drunk, take away the keys. Throughout the year you can always report unsafe drivers to our Traffic Safety Team through the Town’s Road Watch Hotline at (919) 319-4521.

Mind Your Pet

In our town all dogs and cats four months or older must have a pet license. This is important, as our Animal Control officers use the information on the license to locate owners when pets are lost. Complete an application online for one and pick it up at any of our three Community Centers. Also, as pet owners, it’s your responsibility to clean up after your pets on any public or privately-owned property. And when you’re out and about, remember to keep your dog or cat on a leash or lead; not only will this keep it safe, it’s the law!

Protect Yourself

With tax season around the corner, our Police Department reminds you to take steps to avoid being a victim of tax scams. On occasion we hear reports of citizens receiving phone calls or getting emails from people claiming to be IRS agents; sometimes these callers or mailers request immediate payment or threaten arrest. Remember, IRS agents never demand money over the phone or in an email. If you receive one of these calls, hang up; if it’s an email, delete it. Don’t respond to either, as doing so only confirms to scammers that they’ve reached a valid phone number or address. If you receive similar calls or emails, contact our Police Department.

Like Trees?

On March 18 from 1-3 p.m. celebrate the beauty of trees during our Arbor Day festivities! Come out to our Page-Walker Arts & History Center lawn for crafts, educational activities and entertainment. While supplies last we’ll offer a free seedling to each attendee. Visit with our certified arborist who’ll be available to help with tips for proper planting and caring of the seedling and to answer any other questions you might have about trees.

Fix a Leak

Hear it running or see it drip? We’re talking about that leaky toilet or sink. And if your answer’s “yes”, join the national effort to fix leaks and save water during the EPA’s Fix a Leak Week, March 20-26, 2017. You can also get your free toilet dye tablets at our Finance window in Town Hall or use food coloring for those quiet commodes; after all, one in four toilets leaks. “Fix a Leak” at www.townofcary.org
Loose Leaves
If you’ve got loose leaves blowing around your yard, place them in reusable yard waste containers or paper bags and put them at the curb. We’ll pick them up with your weekly yard waste. Or, take them to the Citizen’s Convenience Center for disposal at no charge. We’ll also collect them by appointment at no charge until March 31; call us at (919) 469-4090 to schedule. And don’t forget, leaves can be great additions to compost piles in varying amounts. “Yard Waste” at www.townofcary.org

Safe Water

Each March we join neighboring municipalities and temporarily suspend the use of ammonia in our water treatment process. We do this to comply with the State’s requirement that all water systems that add ammonia temporarily switch to chlorine only. Making that temporary switch helps ensure that our drinking water remains safe and is an important part of maintaining our utility system and our award-winning water.

If you use water for kidney dialysis, fish aquariums and other chlorine-sensitive uses, be aware that from March 1-31 the water may contain chlorine, ammonia or a mixture of both. On April 1 we’ll resume adding ammonia to the water treatment process.

Watch for Recalls

Each year the Consumer Product Safety Commission issues approximately 500 recalls; the list includes everything from smoke alarms, appliances and electronic devices to furniture, clothing and children’s toys. If you’ve got recalled products in your home, there are several ways to find out. Sometimes when you purchase a product, you can register it; if the product is recalled, you should automatically receive a notice at the address you provided. Also visit www.cpsc.org and navigate to the “Recalls” tab; there you can view current recalls or search for older ones. For a complete listing of all recalled products, visit www.recalls.gov where you can also sign up for email alerts about recalls.

From 12:30-1:30 p.m. you can register on-site for the contest and the fun begins at 1 p.m. on the floodplain adjacent to Bond Lake. The Festival’s open to spectators not just kite flyers!
