National Burn Awareness Week

February 5-11 is National Burn Awareness Week and the Cary Fire Department wants everyone to practice safe cooking practices. Most burns associated with cooking are caused by contact with a hot object or liquid rather than by fire or flame. Follow these tips to help prevent scald injuries:

  • Keep hot foods and liquids away from table and counter edges.
  • Have a “kid-free zone” of at least three feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried.
  • Never hold a child while you are cooking, drinking a hot liquid, or carrying hot foods or liquids.
  • Remember to keep a pan lid and dry potholders or oven mitts near you every time you cook.
  • Turn pot or pan handles towards the back of the stove.

So Many Deliveries, So Much Cardboard
Three options to recycle it:

  • Flatten and/or cut boxes to fit in your recycling cart with the lid closed. Avoid cramming so all recyclables can empty into our trucks.
  • Drop cardboard off at the Citizen’s Convenience Center.
  • Request free cardboard collection at townofcary.org/311 or call 311.

Waste and Recycling Resolutions

  • Keep it loose! Always place loose (never bagged) recyclables straight into your recycling cart.
  • Consider composting! Food scraps can be recycled into nutrient-rich compost using a backyard compost bin or taking it to a local food waste drop-off service.
  • Learn more about our annual bin sale, workshops, and our new pilot service opening this year at townofcary.org/compost.

Protect Your Pipes

Don’t let blustery weather burst your pipes. Be sure you’ve detached all hoses from outdoor faucets to help prevent water from freezing and cracking a pipe. Should a pipe burst, turn the water off using your master shut-off valve (typically located near the water heater or in a closet) or call (919) 469-4090 to have your meter turned off at the street.

Annual Reclaimed Water Holiday

The Town will temporarily shut down all of its reclaimed water systems February 13-23 to perform maintenance as part of our annual Reclaimed Water Holiday. This vital process allows the Town to inspect, clean, and repair components and support a reclaimed water system that has been going-and growing-strong for over 20 years! Affected customers can expect to receive reminders by mail in the weeks leading up to the holiday. Learn more at townofcary.org/reclaimedwater.
