Winter Safety
As you enjoy the comforts of the winter season—a cup of coffee or tea, a pot of soup, the warmth of a fireplace—remember to keep yourself and your loved ones safe by following these simple measures:
- Use the back burners on the stove and keep all handles turned away from the stove’s edge.
- Avoid placing hot drinks near a table or a counter’s edge.
- Check your water heater and make sure it is set at 120 degrees or less.
- Install a sturdy screen or safety gate around your fireplace.

Annual Reclaimed Water Holiday
The Town will temporarily shut down all of its reclaimed water systems February 14-24 to perform maintenance as part of our annual Reclaimed Water Holiday. This vital process allows the Town to inspect, clean, and repair components and support a reclaimed water system that has been going-and growing-strong for over 20 years! Affected customers can expect to receive reminders by mail in the weeks leading up to the holiday. Learn more at townofcary.org/reclaimedwater

Waste and Recycling Resolutions
- Keep it loose! Always place loose (never bagged) recyclables straight into your recycling cart.
- Consider composting! Food scraps can be recycled into nutrient-rich compost using a backyard compost bin or taking it to a local food waste drop-off service.
- Learn more about our annual bin sale, workshops, and our new pilot service opening this year at townofcary.org/compost
Leaves Still Loose in the Yard?
Request a free collection between February 7 and March 31. Submit requests at townofcary.org/311 or call 311 Leaves must be at the curb at time of request.
Protect your Pipes
Don’t let blustery weather burst your pipes. Be sure you’ve detached all hoses from outdoor faucets to help prevent water from freezing and cracking a pipe. Should a pipe burst, turn the water off using your master shut-off valve (typically located near the water heater or in a closet) or call (919) 469-4090 to have your meter turned off at the street.
Stay Connected!
Are you receiving communications from the Town of Cary? Are you getting information about topics that matter to you? Signing up to receive text or email messages from us is quick and easy. Visit townofcary.org/email and fill in the required fields. We've got you covered!
Annual Water Disinfection Change
Each year, we join neighboring communities to temporarily suspend the use of ammonia in our water treatment process. We do this to comply with the state’s recommendation that all water systems that add ammonia make a temporary switch to chlorine only. This short-term change is an important part of maintaining our water system, and helps ensure our award-winning water remains safe.
If you use water for kidney dialysis, fish aquariums, and other chlorine-sensitive uses, be aware that from February 25 to April 13, the water may contain chlorine, ammonia or a mixture of both. Questions? Call 311 or visit townofcary.org/waterchange
Share & Care '22
Although there is no in-person Share & Care event this year, be sure to visit townofcary.org/shareandcare to view a list of community resources available for persons with disabilities and those caring for them. We hope to see you soon. In the meantime, stay safe and healthy!
March into Earth Day
We are gearing up to help you go green this spring with great events, classes, and tools for your own home or garden! Native tree giveaways, compost bin sales, and other great workshops are just a few examples of our spring environmental program lineup.
