Applications for the class of 2020 will be accepted February 1-21. Weekly sessions begin in March and run through April. For more information or to apply online, visit

Winter Safety
As you enjoy the comforts of the winter season—a cup of coffee or tea, a pot of soup, the warmth of a fireplace—remember to keep yourself and your loved ones safe by following these simple measures:
- Use the back burners on the stove and keep all handles turned away from the stove’s edge.
- Avoid placing hot drinks near a table or a counter’s edge.
- Check your water heater and make sure it is set at 120 degrees or less.
- Install a sturdy screen or safety gate around your fireplace.

Recycling Resolutions
First, keep it loose. Always place items straight in your recycling cart, loose, never bagged. This will help with the second resolution: keep plastic bags out. These can’t be recycled in our program and they jam up the sorting machinery, making it difficult for correct items to be recycled. And third: when in doubt, throw it out! Use the Waste Wizard tool to know what’s in and out. Happy recycling!

Protect Your Pipes
Don’t let blustery weather burst your pipes. Be sure you’ve detached all hoses from outdoor faucets to help prevent water from freezing and cracking a pipe. Should a pipe burst, turn the water off using your master shut off valve (typically located near the water heater or in a closet) or call (919) 469-4090 to have your water turned off at the meter.
