This Month's Headlines:

Employees of the Year Recognized

Betsie Winokur, an operations analyst for Cary’s Public Works and Utilities departments; Dan Clinton, a senior project manager working on stormwater; and the ACEs Team, a group of employees dedicated to building community resilience, were all honored as Town of Cary 2018 Employees of the Year.

Comprised of Cary Police detectives Armando Bake and Elizabeth Pearson, performing arts education specialist Rachel Baranski and Sam Trogdon, a senior operations and program supervisor at Bond Park, the ACEs team is dedicated to reducing the effects of significant adversity on children’s healthy development.

The announcement was made at the Town’s annual Employee Recognition Luncheon, during which more than 210 staff members were recognized for reaching anniversary milestones. The Town of Cary’s Employee of the Year program was established in 1989 to recognize employees who consistently per-form well beyond what the job description requires.

Cary Police Chief Retires

Chief of Police Tony Godwin retired in December after 28 years of service with the Town of Cary.
Tony spent his entire law enforcement career with the Town, joining the department in 1990 as a patrol officer. He served in numerous other capacities, including leadership positions on Cary’s Emergency Response Team, Field Operations and Criminal Investigations Division. Tony was promoted to Deputy Police Chief in 2014, and Chief of Police in August of 2015.

“When it comes to chiefs of police, Tony’s among the best I’ve ever worked with. He has had a profound impact on me and our community. His genuinely thoughtful and caring nature along with his tremendous capabilities as a communicator have been key in strengthening the bond between our officers and the individuals they serve,” Town Manager Sean Stegall said. Stegall has selected Assistant Police Chief Toni Dezomits to serve as the Town’s Interim Chief of Police.

Disposing of Your Holiday Greenery

Here are two ways to compost your greenery this season. Nev-er include artificial materials like lights, wire, tinsel and ornaments:

  • Place Christmas trees and other natural decorations, such as wreaths and garlands, at the curb by 7 a.m. on your regular curbside yard waste collection day.
  • Leave trees in the designated yard waste area at the Citizen’s Convenience Center, 313 N. Dixon Ave., during operating hours.

Recycling Resolutions

Here are a few resolutions to re-member when recycling in 2019:

  • Keep It Loose: Always place items straight into your recycling cart, loose and never bagged.
  • Keep Plastic Bags Out: These can’t be recycled in our program and jam up the sorting machine, making it difficult for correct items to be recycled.
  • When In Doubt, Throw It Out: If it is not on the accepted list of our Cary recycles program, please don’t put it in your cart. Find the list on the back of your 2019 recycling calendar and online.

Cary Branding Initiative

As part of the research phase of the Town’s community branding effort, we’re asking people who live and/or work in Cary to provide input via a community survey. It’s available on the branding project page of the Town’s website at www.townofcary.org/branding. The survey will remain open through January 31.

Winter Safety Tips

During the long days of winter, a cup of coffee, a pot of soup or the warmth given off by the fireplace can be comfort items. Everyday these items send more than 60,000 children nationwide under the age of five to the emergency room. This winter, take steps to protect your little ones. Use the back burners on the stove and  keep all handles turned away from the stove’s edge. Avoid placing hot drinks near a table or a counter’s edge. Check your water heater and make sure it is set at 120 degrees or less. And finally, install a sturdy screen or safety gate around your fireplace.
