This Month's Headlines:

Dedication, Extra Effort Recognized with Cary’s Employee of the Year Award

Dedication to Cary citizens, the Imagine Cary Community Plan and extra effort everyday is just part of what earned two Town of Cary staff members the Employee of the Year Award. With a work ethic and commitment to providing high-level thinking and top quality work that is second to none, senior planner Mary Beerman has led the Town’s effort to achieve community objectives, and ultimately improve the Town. As a mentor to his fellow Emergency Communications Officers, Charles Massey has assured the quality of calls while fostering the growth of his colleagues. As Employee of the Year, Beerman and Massey receive a plaque, $2,000, and were recognized by the Cary Town Council at the December 14 Town Council meeting.

In her nomination, staff described Beerman as “the consummate team player, continually giving everything she has to the organization and its citizens because she cares about Cary and is passionate about serving and helping others, not because she is seeking any credit or recognition.” Beerman has been with the Town of Cary for nearly a decade and more recently has been working on the review, documentation and presentation of the Fenton preliminary development plan and rezoning request. Fenton is a mixed use development in the Eastern Cary Gateway Special Planning Area.

In his nomination, staff described Massey as a “mentor who helps his colleagues grow professionally.” For much of the year, Massey maintained the quality assurance for the Communication Center’s fire and medical calls, an immense and timeconsuming task. This was one of the main reasons Massey, who has been with the Town for six years, was honored as the 2017 North Carolina National Emergency Number Association Communications Supervisor of the Year.

“The dedication and passion for their work displayed by both Mary Beerman and Charles Massey epitomize why I am so proud to work with the great staff here at the Town of Cary,” said Town Manager Sean R. Stegall.

Employee of the Year nominees— 11 total— were also recognized along with 40 staff members for reaching service milestones of 20, 25 and 30 years of service. The luncheon occurred on the heels of an employee reception in November honoring all Employee of the Year nominees as well as 140 staff members who reached service milestones of five, 10, and 15 years.

Keep Warm

During the long days of winter, a cup of coffee, a pot of soup or the warmth given off by the fireplace can be comfort items. Everyday these items that adults can safely manage send more than 60,000 children nationwide under the age of five to the emergency room. This winter, take steps to protect your little ones. Use the back burners on the stove and keep all handles turned away from the stove’s edge. Avoid placing hot drinks near a table or a counter’s edge where small hands can easily grab them. Check your water heater and make sure it is set at 120 degrees or less. And finally, install a sturdy screen or safety gate around your fireplace. For more scald and burn prevention tips, call Captain Scott Benninghoff, Community Risk Coordinator, at (919) 460-4958.

Recycling Resolutions

First, keep it loose. Always place items straight in your recycling cart, loose, never bagged. This will help with resolution number two, keep plastic bags out. These can’t be recycled in our program and jam up the sorting machinery, making it difficult for correct items to be recycled. And number three, when in doubt, throw it out. If it is not on the accepted list of our Cary recycles program, please don’t put it in your cart. Find the list on the back of your 2018 recycling calendar and online at www.townofcary.org/recycling

So Many Deliveries, So Much Cardboard!

Flatten and/or cut boxes to fit in your recycling cart with the lid closed. Avoid cramming it in so all recyclables can empty into our trucks. If you have more boxes than will fit in your cart, drop it off at the Citizen’s Convenience Center, 313 N. Dixon Ave. or call (919) 469-4090 to schedule a free cardboard collection.
