Cary It Green

Holiday Collections
Veterans Day:
No curbside collection change. The Citizen’s Convenience Center will close Friday, Nov. 10 and open on Saturday, Nov. 11.
Thanksgiving: No curbside collection on Thursday, Nov. 23. Instead, collection on that date will move one day later to Friday, Nov. 24. The Citizen’s Convenience Center will be closed on Thanksgiving and open on Nov. 24.

Loose Leaf Collection Begins October 30
Loose leaf collection is making its seasonal return–this time simplified and improved based on your feedback. What’s new? There are now just three dates to remember to ensure your loose leaves are collected: Oct. 30, Nov. 27, and Jan. 16. Have your leaves at the curb on those dates and we’ll do the rest. In fact, you can access a live map at carync.gov/leaves to track where we are collecting. We’ll have crews in each part of Cary during each collection period, improving our service delivery and efficiency.

Some things about our loose leaf collection program have not changed. Leaves should be behind the curb and not in the street or on the sidewalk, away from meter boxes, sewer cleanouts, fire hydrants and storm drains. Yard waste piles should remain separate and properly prepared for pickup on your usual weekly collection date.

Don’t want to wait for loose leaf collection? Leaves in reusable containers or brown paper bags may be placed curbside for weekly yard waste collection. Yard waste, including leaves, can also be disposed of at no charge to the Citizen’s Convenience Center at 313 N. Dixon Ave. Or, consider leaving the leaves and helping improve the biodiversity of your yard. Get collection reminders and tips via the Cary Collects app or visit carync.gov/leaves for more.

Mattress Collection Resumes
Due to popular demand and new post-collection disposal options, we’re now accepting mattresses and box springs as part of our bulky curbside collection program. Bulky curbside collection fees for both mattresses and box springs still apply: $15 for the first bulky item and $8 for additional bulky items. Requests for collection can be made at carync.gov/311 or by dialing 311 anywhere in Cary, (919) 469-4000 outside town limits.

Citizens can also take mattresses and box springs to the Citizen’s Convenience Center, 313 N. Dixon Ave., for proper disposal; the fee is $10 per item. All fees collected offset the costs of hauling mattresses and box springs to the Wake County disposal site, where items are shredded. Visit wake.gov to learn more about Wake County’s disposal program.

Scary Squash into Compost
Are your decorative gourds or pumpkins looking a bit scarier than usual? Toss them into your backyard compost bin or drop them off in the food waste collection carts at the Citizen's Convenience Center, 313. N. Dixon Ave., to be composted off-site. Please don’t include items with paint, decorations, lights, or candles. Visit carync.gov/foodwaste for a full list of accepted food scraps.http://carync.gov/foodwaste

Cary's Annual Wastewater System Performance Report Now Available

Cary recently issued its annual wastewater report, which summarizes the outstanding performance of its collection and treatment system that supports Cary and Morrisville. The report provides quick facts, descriptions of our treatment facilities, system metrics, and tips to keep the system working smoothly and the environment free from sewer spills. In addition, citizens can learn about the various technologies used to inspect and maintain sewer lines. Visit carync.gov/wastewaterreport to view the report online. You may also request a copy by mail by dialing 311 anywhere in Cary, (919) 469-4000 outside town limits, or visiting services.carync.gov.

Pay Attention To Fire Prevention

Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9 in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage.

This year’s theme is: Cooking Safely Starts with YOU. This month, before the busy holiday cooking season, work to educate everyone in your home about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe when cooking. Visit nfpa.org/fpw for cooking safety tips, coloring sheets, and a printable kid-free cooking zone marker.
