Let’s Talk About Our Future
Join us in November as we continue our discussion about the future of Cary!
As part of Imagine Cary, our multi-year effort to update the Comprehensive Plan, you’re invited to community workshops on November 5 at the Herb Young Community Center and November 6 at the Bond Park Community Center where we’ll talk about transportation and our downtown.
Imagine Cary is our most ambitious planning effort to date and is an opportunity for everyone who cares about the Town to assess our community today, understand choices for the future and suggest policies to match the vision. If you aren’t already involved but would like to be, there are plenty of options for you to participate.

Participate in our Budget Process
We’re beginning the planning process for our 2016 Fiscal Year budget, which identifies services and projects to be undertaken from July 2015 to June 2016. Each year we ask you to share with us the priorities you think should be included in the next budget.
This year, we’re asking for your input throughout October. We call this Budget Public Input month, and, in the past, it took place in February. We’ve made this change so that we receive your suggestions well before our departments begin to prepare their budget requests.
There are several ways for you to register your comments about budget priorities. You can participate in the discussion at the Town Council’s public budget hearing on October 30 at 6:30 p.m. Or, you can share your thoughts with us through email, voicemail, Facebook, or Twitter.

Holiday Collections
Our offices will close November 11 for Veteran’s Day, but solid waste, yard waste and yellow week recycling will be collected as normal that week.
During the week of November 23, we’ll adjust our collection schedule due to Thanksgiving. Collection for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday customers, including yellow week recycling customers, will be one day early as follows: Tuesday’s collection will be on Monday, November 24; Wednesday’s collection will be on Tuesday, November 25; and Thursday’s collection will be on Wednesday, November 26. Friday customers will have their materials collected as regularly scheduled.
Our offices will close November 27-28 for the Thanksgiving holiday, and the Citizen’s Convenience Center will close November 27.

Support the C-Tran Food Drive
Ride C-Tran’s fixed routes for free from November 10–15 during our second annual food drive. Bring one non-perishable or canned food item to any bus and receive one free ride. If you donate two or more items, you’ll receive a voucher to ride the fixed route system for the day.
Your donated items will be taken to Dorcas Ministries Food Pantry in Cary to help meet the demand for food assistance during the holiday season. Riders are encouraged to donate canned meat, tuna, soups, fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, uncooked pasta, dry cereal and boxed rice.
C-Tran, our affordable, reliable transportation service, operates six fixed routes Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m.-10 p.m., and connects to Triangle Transit.

Update on Architectural Design Standards
Our Architectural Building Design Standards, which were adopted in 2005, have resulted in the creation of high-quality buildings within our community. The Standards have helped us create a community that is attractive and inviting
Soon we will begin the process of updating these Standards, and we’re interested in hearing your feedback. If you would like to know more about the process or about participating, email Ricky.Barker@townofcary.org.

BUD Bits
Our Howlin’ Good Halloween events are October 23-31. Don’t miss the spooktacular fun. “Halloween” at www.townofcary.org.
Remember that your toilet is not a trash can. Keep trash out of the sewer system to help prevent costly sewer blockages and environmentally damaging overflows. (919) 469-4090
When changing motor oil, drain it into a clean plastic container with a screw top lid; label it “Used Motor Oil;” and call us to request a free pickup. If your vehicle is leaking fluids you could be harming the environment. Contain the leak with rags or cat litter; sweep up and safely dispose of the waste material. (919) 469-4090
Please periodically trim trees, bushes, plants, grass and remove obstructions like mulch that may be covering your water meter.
Loose Leaf Collection
We’re collecting loose leaves from your street twice before Christmas at no charge. You can find out when we’ll be in your neighborhood by reviewing the map and schedule we mailed in early October or by searching “Leaf Collection” at our website.
On the first day of collection in your area, place loose leaves at the curb by 7 a.m., out of the street and away from storm drains. If you miss the collection, we’ll continue to pick up leaves with your weekly yard waste collection that are left curbside in reusable containers or brown paper bags.

We’ve Named New Park
Our future community park at 9725 Penny Road now has an official name – Jack Smith Park – thanks to a unanimous vote by the Cary Town Council at their regular meeting on Thursday, September 11. Our Town Council’s action marks Jack Smith’s 25th year of service to our community, making him the longest serving Council member on record as well as having been in office longer than any mayor in Cary’s history.
Once completed, the Jack Smith Park will include our first spray ground, a major children’s play area, our second dog park, a climbing rock, picnic shelters, paved and unpaved trails and an open lawn area. The park will also be home to public art pieces by North Carolina folk artist Vollis Simpson and sculptor William Moore.
Funding for this project was approved by voters in 2012 as part of our Community Investment Bonds referendum.

Hot Tips: Heat Your Home Safely
As the weather cools, we’ll all start turning up the heat. Because heating systems can start fires if not used and maintained properly, we have tips to help keep you safe.
Check baseboard heaters often to remove objects that have fallen on top or nearby.
Never leave portable heaters unattended, as they heat up rapidly and can easily ignite items close by.
If you are using a fireplace or wood stove to heat your home, keep the door or fire screen shut to protect your home from sparks.
Have your chimney inspected and serviced before each heating season.
Regularly change the batteries in your smoke alarms.
