Placed at the Curb
Garbage and recycling carts should be placed at the curb no earlier than dusk the night before your collection day and no later than 7 a.m. on your collection day. Set the cart so that the arrows on the lid point toward the street and keep them away from light poles, mailboxes, fire hydrants and parked cars. Remove the emptied cart from the curb no later than 6 a.m. the next day. (919) 469-4090

Label a Drain
Storm drains lead directly to our rivers and streams. Help keep them clean and clear to protect water quality. Spread the word by volunteering to label a drain or two near you. Call (919) 469-4030 to get started. Individuals and groups are welcome.

Mosquito Prevention Tips

It’s summertime, and those pesky, blood-thirsty buzzers are in full force. With the arrival of the Zika virus to North America, now more than ever it’s important that you take steps to protect you and your family from mosquitoes:
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts, pants and socks. Apply repellent to exposed skin as directed. Consider treating clothing with permethrin insect repellent.
  • Every few days empty and scrub or throw out items outdoors that can hold water like tires, buckets, birdbaths or trash containers.
  • Keep windows and doors shut and use air conditioning when possible. Use, install or repair window and door screens.

Be Aware, Not Scared

Copperhead snake activity heats up as the warmer weather approaches this summer. Neighborhoods, greenways, parks, ball¬field and playground edges and suburbia, in general, are prime places for copperhead encounters throughout the summer and the fall. Here are some easy steps you can take to stay safe: Wear shoes when walking outside around your house after dark and use a flashlight. Bites aren’t typically fatal, but they sure hurt!

Remember, when you encounter one, don’t aggravate it; just move around it. Never attempt to pick it up. You can’t get bitten if you don’t get close. If you are bitten, seek medical attention. For more information about snakes and other local wildlife, check out the programs at Stevens Nature Center at Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve.

Rules to Avoid Rabies

A few simple common sense rules, if followed, can help you and your pet avoid being exposed to rabies this summer:

  1. Make sure to vaccinate your pets on schedule without fail.
  2. Don’t approach to pet or feed any wild animal or even a stray pet if you are unfamiliar with its vaccination history.
  3. Don’t let pets roam free or leave them unattended.
  4. Odd behavior in wild mammals can be a sign of several dis¬eases. Don’t approach these animals!
  5. Keep garbage secured in cans so wildlife can’t get at it, and don’t leave pet food outside your house to draw wild animals.

Hot Tips: Be Safe at College

The time of year is fast approaching when students will be heading off for the first time or returning to colleges and universities. Whether housing is on campus or off, fire safety should be a top priority. For students choosing on-campus housing, learn the building’s evacuation plan, and always evacuate when the alarm sounds. Before signing the lease for off-campus housing, make sure smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms are present and functional. Windows and doors should open easily and never be blocked. Consider an escape ladder for bedrooms located above the ground floor. Having a fire extinguisher and knowing how to use it is also a good idea. Check the gauge to make sure the extinguisher is fully charged or in the green range; recharge or replace it as needed.

Seconds matter in a fire, and security bars or window-mounted air conditioners could impede your escape. Finally, never disable, remove or cover a smoke alarm! Practicing escape routes, meeting places and notification are also important. Being smart about what to do in case of a fire is everyone’s job whether you’re at or away from home.
