This Month's Headlines:

Don't Be the Dealer

Too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands. That’s dangerous and often tragic. According to the DEA, the non-medical use of prescription drugs ranks second only to marijuana as the most common form of drug abuse in America and the CDC says more than 1,000 people are treated every day in emergency departments for misusing prescription opioids.

To help keep your home safe and clean, the Town of Cary will be accepting unused or expired medications at six locations on April 28 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

  • Spring Daze - Fred G. Bond Metro Park
  • Cary Police Department - 120 Wilkinson Ave.
  • Christ the King Lutheran Church - 600 Walnut St.
  • Walgreens - 1210 Kildaire Farm Rd.
  • Walgreens - 3441 Kildaire Farm Rd.
  • Walgreens - 10210 Green Level Church Rd.

It is recommended you scratch out all identifying information on the prescription drug congainer to make it unreadable. This will help to protect your identity and the privacy of your personal health information. We also ask that you don’t flush unused and expired medication as it can be harmful to the water supply. You can drop off unused and expired medication at the Town’s DropBox inside of the Cary Police Department year-round.

Cary Conducting Development Fee Study

In 2017, new requirements for utility development fees were established by the North Carolina legislature, and as a result Cary hired an experienced consultant to conduct an updated fee study. The study is now posted on the Town’s website and we are seeking your comments. The consultant will consider public comments before finalizing the report. Town Council will also hold a public hearing before consideration and adoption of the new utility development fees.

Stay Safe at the Fire Pit

Sitting under the stars by a crackling fire has its appeal. It’s where stories are told, sing-a-longs happen, and meals are cooked over an open flame. But campfire mishaps can cause injuries. With a few safety tips, you can prevent these accidents.

In the Town of Cary, recreational fires and the use of fireplaces and fire pits are regulated by the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code. Recreational fires are three feet or less in diameter and two feet or less in height for pleasure, religious, ceremonial, cooking, warmth or similar purposes.  They must be at least 25 feet from a structure or combustible material. Portable fire pits must be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and must not be operated within 15 feet of a structure or combustible material. Recreational fires and fire pits cannot be used to burn rubbish or yard waste. Open burning, bonfires and land clearing require permits from the Town of Cary.

Outdoor Fire Tips:
Avoid burning on windy, dry days. It is easier for open burning to spread out of control when it is windy and dry.
Watch children while the fire is burning. Never let children or pets play or stand too close to the fire.
Never use gasoline or other flammable or combustible liquids.
Always have a hose, bucket of water, or shovel and dirt or sand nearby to put out the fire.
Make sure to put it completely out before leaving the site.

Alternate Day Watering

When starting up your automatic irrigation system, be sure to check for leaks and misdirected spray heads. Set your control box to water as needed following our Alternate Day Watering (ADW) Ordinance and your rain sensor on “activate.” While our ADW schedule also applies to hose sprinklers, it does not apply to systems using reclaimed, pond or well water.

Convenience Center Reminder

Whether it’s trash, yard waste or items to be recycled, unloading from box trucks is prohibited at the Citizens Convenience Center. Do you have a landscaper who tends to your lawn and garden? If you do, remember that contractors can’t use our Citizen’s Convenience Center for yard waste disposal. They’ll need to take it to a facility that accepts contractor waste.
